A friend of mine turned up two unslotted dress bayonets by Klaas. The grips and hilt fittings are maybe 75% of the size of normal dress bayonets. I have photos showing the comparitives size between regular, this size and miniature bayounets but due to computer woes, I can't post it right now. I'll send it to a friend and ask him to post it.
Any ideas off hand?

It may have been a trench knife. See link below. There are many threads on trench knives. You may search for them by clicking on the search button and type in trench.

It sounds like you are describing something like this Puma I bought from a veteran. It is shown with a short-bladed regular KS98. This is the only one I have ever encountered.
