Thanks for replying John, much appreciated. I'm not a bayonet man myself but, have pondered the thought of placing a bid, I like the look of this one. Can you tell me anything about it and what should be my max bid?

This piece is complete, but obviously NOT unissued. I personally do not like it because someone has 'worked' on it. The scabbard was painted which means either all the blue were gone or there are rust underneath. The flashguard might have been changed because there are bruises on the wooden slabs (which doesn't bother me too much for an early blade) but the flashguard is still straight. These kind of bruises were usually caused by soldiers using the bayonet as a hammer so chances are the flashguard might possibly be dented too.

Thank you also Keith for your informative response. Personally I like it, even if someone has used it as a makeshift hammer for the odd nail or two. I asked the seller for additional photos and that blade is mint, the only marks on that blade are scabbard marks.

I am not sure if that scabbard has been painted though Keith but then I am not really up on bayonets. Does anyone else have any opinions on the item?

PS - Have you lived in Hong Kong for long Keith? I used to live in Stanley and so miss my trips to Lantau Island (I think it was Lantau )for the deep fried king prawns in black pepper.

Hi Davey,

Sorry for delay in response as I was having computer problems. The scabbard is definitely painted as you can see the finishing showing the maker's mark & date code is different from the other parts of the scabbard.

Yes, I have live in Hong Kong for as long as I remember because I am born & raise here ! Stanley is a nice place Davey, but there are lots of changes, you might missed your direction there now

Davey, I agree that the scabbard has been painted. It almost looks like edge dressing.
We used to use it on our Boots while I was in the military. It could be paint though,,cant really be sure by the pics. I also agree about the grips in the sense they have been "slammed" by someone. The damage extent could go either way, in my opinion, as to wither the the flashguard should be dented or not.
If you want it, good luck getting it. Matching early SG84/98 III's are getting harder to come by.
