I think it's very important to reflect back on the tremendous historical occurance on this day 67 years ago.
And to also remember the extreme sacrifices that were made by so many on both sides of the war.

Dates like this should definitely be kept in our memories. The people who fought and lived during the "greatest generation" are dying off fast and WW2, and even the Vietnam war are becoming like ancient history to many in this country today.

I'm glad you posted this, Jim. There has been scant media coverage on D-Day. I checked the cable TV movie channels (HBO, etc.)for tonight. NOT ONE is showing a movie related to D-Day or WWII. It's disgraceful. Lest we forget.
I know Grumpy and I think it's a shame. I haven't seen so much as a mention but perhaps I will on the 6 O'clock news. I watch Brian Williams and he's usually pretty good about bringing up topics like this.
You would think at least ONE movie channel would be running "The Longest Day" tonight!

It upsets me at the things that are important to Americans these days. Smut is beloved by popular culture nowadays while hero's of our many conflicts are vilified. I posted a rather harsh post on my Facebook account in response to having only one comment on my D-Day post. Many American don't know or could careless. Its rather sad.
When I first started posting here years ago there would have been many more posts on this thread paying tribute to those on both sides who sacrificed so much during WW II. I guess it's a sign of the times that this important and historical day is being ignored by even the regular posters on this forum. To me a very sad state of affairs.

We must never forget! I have visited Normandy a few times with family. My family also has had a tradition of watching the Longest Day for many years now and just got done watching today. God bless them all in uniform!
Absolutely. I wonder how many high school seniors, or even college students, know what D-Day, VJ Day, Pearl Harbor Day, etc., mean. Very few, I'll bet. The reason is students are not being taught WWII history to any degree, if at all. From what I hear, the history now being taught in our schools has a decidedly liberal bent. "Social change" in the Twentieth Century and all that involves, is now the main thrust in history classes. I fear when our generation is gone, the main turning points in American history will be lost to "political correctness" and a leftist agenda. Such is well underway.
Political correctness is an absolute disgrace, I would be willing to bet 99% of vets from D-Day would be mortified living a day in our lives now!!! Cant say this... Cant say that, blah blah blah, thats one thing i love about the older generation they arent affraid to speak their mind, And why should they without them we would probably be speaking German now. JMO
Least we can teach our children right. So they know the importants of these events. Our family was discussing a family trip recently and me and my fiance asked our son where he would rather go. Disney or Pearl Harbor being my grandfather served on the Arizona before getting rheumatic fever. He chose Pearl Harbor without reservation.. I am proud that he'd rather learn of those men and womens sacrifice than visit disney.. I agree its pretty hopeless future for our posterity to know the true history of our world but we can try..
Sadly, the new generation don't care about the past and its glories, all they want is instant gratification.
Moral values have been surpassed by the mighty $$$$$, they want a brand new car, a big house and spend there time on the internet with Facebook or Twitter.
We can't do much about it, that's today's world anmd it ain't going back the old ways.
Militaria collecting will take a plunge as no one is very much interested in that kind of stuff nowadays.
The new generation would rather spend their money on the latest fashion trend.
I didn't forget D Day I wore this shirt all day on the 6th not one person made a comment.

Best D-Day Tv in UK was an excellent docu-drama covering the Canadian landings on Juno-so little appreciated or understood compared to Omaha. Riveting stuff.

Since my wife was having a "Hen party" last nite I took the opportunity to watch "Saving Private Ryan" again. As far as I'm concerned this movie is a masterpiece and one of the best WW II films ever.
