Could somebody give me an educated guess as to whether this is real and what nationality?. The blade is showing surface rust that appears a little too new?. Many thanks

This appears to be a French Navy dagger from the period 1814 - 1830. Since there was such a wide variety of designs from this period I can't state this absolutely. However, the dagger has all the characteristics of this period - fluted mother-of-pearl grip, floral decoration to the ferrule, inverse quillions, etc.

My thoughts also lean towards French. I would be very cautious when dealing with these daggers. While the age on the outside of this one looks good, they are reproducing similar daggers billed as French napoleonic.

Truly, this early dagger market is buyer beware.

Guys,
Thanks for the appraisal and the warning. Here are a couple more pictures to see what you think, the blade has me concerned as the rust appears too new if you know what I mean. The wear to scabbard and grip damage seems legitate but would appreciate your comments >>.
