hi there,
not familiar with this one. does it have any maker markings or silver markings on the band?
Posted By: Mahler Re: Opinions about this skull ring? - 02/27/2022 03:32 AM
It has 830 mark on the inside and Swedish controll stamp for silver on the outside.
With my 13 years in this hobby I've never seen a canteen ring with this pattern, nor have I ever seen one with the Swedish silver stamp. When Swedish stamps is on the outside, It's mostly on foreign stuff that's been controlled / or repaired then stamped.

Update: The ring went for auction and today I won it, some other biker dude that just liked skulls ( according to previous auctions he bid on ) bid on this ring. I couldn't help myself, I'd rather have it for its history and not letting it go to some biker.I will post more photos of it once it's in my possession. This could be a german canteen ring that a swedish volunteer bought, then brought back home. I'm not saying it is, but it COULD be a Waffen SS ring if so. Anyway, I'm happy about my bid, paid €113 for it. The swedish interest in collecting ww2 rings is not that popular as in other countries. Let's hope the inside will look good once i'm able to snap some micro photos.

Hi Mahler, my understanding was that German rings never have a stamp on the outside of the shank. I have a Dutch and a Finnish ring from the wartime period, they both have a stamp on the outside but I have never seen a German ring with this. I don‘t think that this is a Third Reich German ring. Maybe it really is Swedish.
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi, you're correct, this is a Swedish stamp for imported silver. It was a law that was made in 1912 that all silver and gold must be stamped with this oval stamp. Sweden didn't had any skull rings during the ww2. My beliefs is that this must have been ( if it's a legit ring from the ww2 era, won't know until macro shots are taken) a german ring that a Swedish volunteer have bought, and once it got back to sweden it got stamped for imported silver.

Here's a link to read about Swedish volunteers in the Finnish and German army during ww2.

Here are a proper set of stamps which include a date code..

I've collected a little over 40 years,, don't think thats German... Have not seen this pattern ,but not familiar Swedish rings. Small problem is,,,the ring is nice and smooth from wear but the outside hallmarks looks crisp...
You didn't really pay a real lot for it and its a nice looking piece so I'd keep it.. Keep investigating, go on a Silver collectors site and double check the markings etc.

Hi Gaspare, thanks for the links! Imported silver is not stamped with dates, only silver that was made in Sweden can be stamped with a date, since it' was stamped within the timeframe it was made. Also the ring looks like it's been damaged and repaired, if the person went to have it repaired that stamp would have been applied by the Swedish law. It doesn't have to be a german ring, you're right, not an official canteen-ring at least, since it differs from the period advertisements. But it has 830 silver stamp on the inside. I've bought some original Swedish military rings from the person before. This is a gamble for sure.

So the ring arrived, and it's not a German ring It's a Norwegian ring. Makes sense since the other ring I got from the seller was from the Northen Sweden ( Norrbottens Regemente - Panzer Division ). Might be a Norwegian volunteers ring that got compenscated (or found) after the war in Finland, when they went back home through Northen Sweden.

Thank you, guys! That's true, I still have to find a Swedish one. In Scandinavia skulls isn' t that popular, mostly Germans and Norwegians wore the skulls back in the days. Very popular within the Norwegian Legion that took part in Waffen SS when the Germans occupied them. They also fought with Finland but later against Finland in the Lappland war.

I think it was worn by someone either a German or a Norwegian in that war. Since it came with the Norrbotten ring.

Just for clarifications, the Norrbotten ring ( Norrbottens Regemente ) Has a great history and are very close with the Finnish army. Half of the people in the northen Sweden near the border speaks Finnish. They helped the Finns in Lapland war. Both this ring and Norrbotten ring was part of a bundle but got sold separately.

You have to know the history with Sweden and Finland in order to fully understand their alliance. But what better way than to show you their march song to give you some shine.

Finnish march song

Norrbottens Regemente March

In Swedish vocals and lyrics

But this is really the place for 'vintage' private purchase jewelry, or related to the Honor Ring etc. - Military theme ,,it would be great to keep it at that.. Otherwise,,,look around at the many back pages and other forums on this site and have a good time.. ,G.
