Hi all, this will be my first thread. I thought that I would post my ring at the invitation of Gaspare (thank you again for the warm welcome). This ring was found just this year (March 2020) by metal detector near the town of Lety in the Czech Republic (it even still has specks of dirt behind the skull!). I have attached a photo of where the ring was found. It is a very well worn down ring that has seen its fair share of use. The ring was awarded 7.3.36 and is named to one Untersturmfuhrer Martin Gruss, DOB 03/02/1909, SS Nr. 44746, Party number 505 767. He was in the 17th SS Standarte. I have attached photos of the information and period documents that I have of him, unfortunately it is not much as NARA is and has been closed since the ring was found because of the pandemic. I hope that I am able to find more information about him soon. I am looking forward to reading all of your thoughts about the ring. (quick note, the rings seam behind the skull is difficult to see but can be seen under the right lighting conditions).

Best regards,
Sarcasmos

At first glance I like it. Looks like a nice big size too. I think there may have been a discussion on a Gruss named ring perhaps on WA but I could be forgetting. Looks like an honor ring to be studied for the honor ring forum! Thanks for the post

good catch, the ring was in fact originally posted in March on the WAF by a fellow named Lacky who was the original finder of the ring.

Yes I recall now. The question was on the double s at the end. I would assume as fraktur it was correct for the pre war period. But I know the word gruss in German has a letter ? which is different but then I am not a native speaker so I would not know the details on these words. Regardless I like it. Nice ring

Hello gents, in his personal files we can see that the name is written -Gruss- which is exactly corresponding with the ring inscription (here written with two -long s- which is also totally correct for -s- on the end of a word), The -Grusz- (should be socalled long "s" which looks somehow like an -f- without bar, combined with "z" which builds the socalled "sharp s" although obviously incorrectly written in the DAL can be observed from time to time when it was not known for sure how a name was written in the document of birth (which alone should be the measurement for the correct writing of a name but as said often disobeyed) concerning names with unsure/different kinds of writing. It happens that such name can be written even in a different way in different period personal papers. So nothing wrong or no red flag for me and I like this ring very much which I did already when I have seen it over there at WAF.
Regards,
