While things are slow.. A ring seen sometimes in collections..

There are a few stories about this ring. One involving a 13th Cen Duke in the Baltics,,another that its a Latvian folk ring given to a young man by his Father. And,,the last,,that directly postwar some of the Latvian 'Forrest Brothers' , Latvian anti-Communist Freedom fighters were wearing them..

There are some crappy, low quality examples out there. I got this one from a friend. Seems to be made well. No content or hallmark,,but it is Silver..

Would not be unreasonable to have a old example in a WW2 collection:

Heres a shot of the Duke!

These rings are still available and also seem to be good quality..

Last is a shot that claims to be a ancient example!

all the Baltic rings - patriotics (or even the fashion of the time), if you can call it that, they have no direct relation to the war, they simply liked to wear these rings at the time, as it seems to me, their whole essence is that they were found legionnaires from their Baltic states, otherwise, the topic is not very interesting and very large, Gaspar you know
Even what you show is an ordinary traditional ring, connected with an old-fashioned legend and nothing more, everything seems trivial to them, it?s not particularly interesting to me, I can show you many rings from Tsarist Russia and from the early period of the USSR, which are much more rare and interesting than this theme ))) ????

P.S. their rings and theme, too overestimated, in significance and rarity, it is more than ordinary jewelry

Well, then, Evgeniy,

Show us many rings from Tsarist Russia and from the early period of the USSR, which are much more rare and interesting than this theme.

E. , Of course all those welcome here! I was simply stating that I have seen these Latvian Namejs rings in collections. And, heard the Forest Brothers wore them also..

Many folk type rings were worn during the war. Many WW1 and Freikorp era rings also worn well in to the war..

Yeah please topics on them would be very interesting.

That skull with the rifles WW1? looks familiar from somewhere... Your Skeleton around band,,some kind of simliar here many years ago called them 'Dr.s rings'..
Please show any hallmarks too, love to see Kokoshnic marks..

all this rings with Russian hallmarks and was found in Russia
G. I'll do shots of stamps in other topic IMO, that not separate with ur ring

P.S. yes latvian legioners wearing this rings, but this is a tradition of the time, fashion, but in general these rings are not related to ss, they are just popular patriotic rings, it seems to me that they are overestimated, often mixing with the subject of ss

:

If I can make little correction. Name Namejs ring comes from A.Grins book "Namejs ring" 1931. Two rings of this design were found at Daugmales hillfort in 1938. Dated 12th or begining of 13th century. Almost 100 years before Duke Namejs. At time of actual Duke Namejs these rings were not used anymore, but legend was born. It is not known if these were made before ww2, but they widespread at POV and DP camps in western occupation zone in Germany after ww2. With time it become sign of recognition of Latvians. Since 1956 they were given in to Latvian officers organization founded in Melbourne. Later there started tradition of giving these rings to sons when they become 18th.

In soviet occupied Latvia these rings become popular only at the end of 80ies and 90ies.

So this is not true that these were used by Latvian 'Forrest Brothers' , Latvian anti-Communist Freedom fighters etc.

thanks for the info / comments..

Not sure if its the same book but there is the novel Ring of the Namejs [?] that had a published date of 1928,,probably the same book in one form or another..

I wrote 'stories because thats what they are,,Dukes, Father to Sons etc. . There is the legend you mentioned that was born.
But with the rings folk legend and its symbolism etc. whether real or fantasy with the rings association to solidarity, unity etc. and your mention of rings found in the late 30s made in the 13th cen.they were probably made on and off since then.

We can not say that some in a group of postwar freedom fighters did not wear the ring in the 50s. I write this because of a couple emails I received that these rings were found in Latvian, Baltic WW2 areas and again from 'stories' about the FFs wearing them.. IF these collectors have such a ring in their collection all I'm saying is that IF they like it it would be fine in my opinion to include in their collection..

It's a interesting ring with a few different stories/legends about it that is a good read..., Thanks , G.
