finnish ring pattern.
Given for giveing money to the finnish airforce.
This one Looks from the pics like a fake - the flower in the middle of the swas should be very clear.
Posted By: paulbear Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/08/2014 07:56 PM
thanks for the info, this can not be a fake though as it just came with a small lot of vet bring backs all items correct. Think the pic is a bit blurry could be better.

hi paulbear
thanks for showing us your veteran aquired wedding ring as you thought it was. i know you collect canadian military pins and you really know your bussiness about what you collect thats for sure . how ever on this ring forum we have the best experenced people including myself with many years of experence collecting these rings . we collect all kinds of military rings we are also aware of many fake reproduction rings on the market no matter if the vet brought them back from europe with hitlers front teeth that doesnt make it real or period made ring its just a story just like odel and evgeniy said it is a finish airforce ring not a wedding ring dated 1940 and they do make fakes of this ring along with outhers so this is why we do not buy the stories some times they are true some times they are not . it is possible like odel says that the picture with flower is blured if its blured and not sharp detail to the flower then its a fake hope you understand our point thanksgod bless every body merry christmas to all andy militarynut

Paulbear, can you get a clearer shot of the flower? Then these guys can see if it's blurred or not, seems like from what they said that could clarify things. Best, Mike
Posted By: paulbear Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/08/2014 10:52 PM
a bit condescending there Andy , see my title there is a question mark ref wedding ring, had no idea what is was only its provenance, sorry if I stepped on your ego but thanks for the info as to what is really represents odal.

On this pics it looks very soft to me, but this can be only the not so good pics too wink

Paul,,,, Finland reproduces these every so often. Money goes to the WW2 Vets..
Even though there are plenty of these around the crooks don't know it and reproduce them as "Finnish Nazi Party Rings" eek

this ring has been in a cigarette tin since the war had seen it and a few other things years ago just sold by the son. Are these silver ?
Posted By: Mike (aka Byzanti) Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/09/2014 08:36 PM
Now that's interesting. The link tells of a nation that doesn't have a swastika stigma, Finland. Considering their role in WW2, that's pretty understandable. These might be some of the most pragmatic people in the world, when it comes to loyalties and symbolism...how intriguing! Regardless of the outcome here, I'm glad that the proceeds of the Finnish replicated rings goes to the vets.
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/10/2014 12:38 AM
Paul,
, please,,I'm not saying yours is a copy. Only making you aware they were copied.. And yes they are supposed to be silver.

The ring goes against the norm for Finland. Usually they are very strict with their hallmarking and Finnish jewelry is hallmarked with date codes..

So your ring is for the airmen. There is another with just the rosette for the Army guys and that also just has a date..
Then the ring for the Winter War / Continuation War vets that has the Lion head and is properly hallmarked. Don't have access to my notes but pretty sure they were all available by 45.

So Paul yours is probably 1st generation due to your story/provenance. They are all nice pieces and in my opinion should be included in WW2 ring collections..

from Gaspare's link

"The original Air Defence ring, which was made of iron, was given to couples who donated their own gold wedding bands to the military to help finance the war effort."
Posted By: Mike (aka Byzanti) Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/10/2014 11:46 AM
Wait...are they supposed to be iron or silver?
Posted By: hapur Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/10/2014 12:42 PM
Wartime ring should be iron, same as German ww1 ring "iron for gold". Modern repros are silver.
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/11/2014 05:46 PM
sorry correct!,,rings made right after the war [reissue] would be silver. Most production and what most would have is 45/46 to 1950s..

Paul,,throw a magnet on it! IF you get a hit,,,thats a good thing for a change!
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/12/2014 01:19 PM
I have the same like in start topic, my ring was made IMHO from German silver
is it correct material ?

Wartime rings are iron, modern repros are silver. Early postwar could be german silver.

I'm really hoping the magnet picks it up, there, Paulbear...my fingers are crossed for ya! What a cool find that would be!
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/13/2014 12:35 PM

reason is pretty simple - patriotic. By the way they still make this ring officially to raise funds for veterans. Yon can read more - Gaspare gave link above.
I do not have airforce version. Somewhere I have army version - plain ring with rosete/flower.
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/13/2014 09:59 PM
yeh I see it link and read
But on shot ring have some diff moments: flower, plumage and wings
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/14/2014 06:20 AM
the plain ring with just rosette [photo on pg.2] is for Army..

Evgeniy , your ring looks like it might be iron! What happens with the magnet?
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/14/2014 09:16 AM
Gaspare my ring not magnet, I check it ...
On my opinion material german silver
Where from take info about iron ring ?
Can you show us iron ring ?
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/15/2014 03:45 AM
-info is from that link. It explains first rings were iron and sold to support the airmen..
Here is link again:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1573114/Finlands-swastika-ring-honours-war-dead.html

,,,my ring is from the 1950s and is not magnetic. Some sort of alloy, maybe very low silver content,,maybe a German silver type [?]
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/15/2014 09:19 AM
Yes, after when I re-read text , I look it
It bad news ))) Now I need buy iron ring ))))
As I understand post war rings too has date stamp 1940 ?
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/16/2014 10:58 AM
2 Gaspare
Buy the way, is it one source(link above) about info that finn ring must be in iron ?
May be writer mistake ?
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/16/2014 07:08 PM
'couples who donated their own gold wedding bands to the military to help finance the war effort.'

Usually when you gave gold,,you got back iron! I know not a good deal wink

I've read this article before,,said the same iron so I don't think a mistake..
You got to remember it was probably a one year production. Could be the very next year or when produced again they were this non mag. alloy.

Good luck getting the iron ring. Pretty rare to find a survivor! But knowing how the counterfeiters read here they should be plentiful in a few weeks! wink laugh
Posted By: odal Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/16/2014 07:24 PM
In my opinion ist similar to the german/austrian wwI-rings and the netherlands wwII donating rings.
Who knows what countries had still somewhat similar....

Ok friend, you hit the nail exact - i have never seen one of this pattern made of iron - thats the exercise for 2015: find one in iron!
I have still one made from a alloy - colour looks like yours.

Thread turns very interesting wink

Someone here that has ever seen this pattern in iron?
Sometimes i wish we could sit around a table and (try) to talk with eatchother. grin
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/18/2014 04:05 PM
heard from a friend that collects Finnish medals/badges etc. He says the ring in iron is very rare. He doesn't think many were made,,or that many were gotten for the trade in of their gold wedding rings.
That most were the 45 and after non mag. alloy type.. He has said he's never seen a iron example in his 30 years of collecting!
Check your rings guys!!
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/19/2014 10:06 AM
may be it true info
but strange : no one seen it ring, but sure that ring must be in iron
I have one more quastion : those who have the ring, what height band in mm ?

I wrote it above.
The exercise for 2015 to find one in iron....and i am pretty sure too...there is none because all this rings are made from this alloy.

If this dug ring on your pic is a real period one and is this alloy too, so most possibly all (or most) rings to this time were made from this material.
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 12/31/2014 05:01 PM
that dug ring really looks like iron. Even looks like rust on it!
you guys got to remember, only the first version of it was iron![1940]. And, very small amount was made and a small amount were bought..By the next issue [41?] they were this non magnetic alloy. So this is probably one of the hardest 3rd reich era rings to find,,,good luck hunting guys!

All of them i have seen had 1940 inside the band.
You think there exist some with other years in it?

To the ring on E`s pic.
I don`t think a iron made rind surrives 70 years in earth and has still this condition.
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 01/02/2015 06:05 AM
- my source tells me they are all 1940 dated, for the 'Continuation War',,but only the 1940 ring in Iron..

So far very little documentation/info on the ring other than the link we have and our own discussions. I think now that we have raised interest there is hope some info will turn up.

Yes the ring to get for 2015 is this gold for iron Finn ring for sure!
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 01/02/2015 06:03 PM
ring on pic 100% not iron
but german silver
2 G
I cant agree with your argument iron: I show shot from dugger, he say that ring too from german silver
Here in Russia (as you know almost 99% rings dugs), no one heard about iron ring
Your arguments only words, from finn man
No shots ... nothing
I would like to see more iron arguments )))
Posted By: hapur Re: WEDDING RING ? - 01/03/2015 07:53 AM
found this thread where owner claims his ring is made of steel.
http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/third-reich-rings/original-fake-rings-154119/
Posted By: Evgeniy Re: WEDDING RING ? - 01/03/2015 10:00 AM
on a shots I see german silver , like on mine shots ...
steel has other colour
and man who show it ring nothing understand in it )))
why u think that he correctly identified the material ?
One more repite: no one here in Russia, have not seen or heard about these rings made of iron and no one here show me iron ring
And I think it fantasy topic
Posted By: Gaspare Re: WEDDING RING ? - 01/03/2015 04:45 PM
Evgeniy.,,,yes your rings come from vets and the ground. There would be no reason for one of these rings to be in any of Russia's former republics..

These rings were for civilians! most who gave their wedding rings for this steel ring. It would be hard to find one out of Finland.

It's just a low produced ring, made for the civilian populace, yes finding one is going to be super hard,,a true rare ring to get!.
