With 2005 in the can, what did you guys pick-up this past year specifically for your collections. Many of us buy things with the intent of reselling, but, what did you acquire in order to 'spruce-up' the old gathering?

I'll go first. Starting with the mundane and more or less progress to the sublime... Roll Eyes Razz Big Grin

From another Forum member Wink - an undecaled ckl62 M-42. Nuthin' at all special about him other than he looks like he's 'been there'.

Awesome helmets Cody! Hard to pick a fave, but I'd probably say #3. This has been my first year of collecting, and of the five helmets I bought this year, the one I'm now posting is my only permanent resident. It's a salty DD Luft, but it talks to me (well, you know what I mean!) It has initials and feldpost number inside which I have traced to a Luftnachrichten unit.

I only added one helmet to my pride last year and I believe this one covers 2003 as well. A nice two color sawdust camo acquired at the Max show last year. This one was bought in the hotel room pending the flip of a coin (which I lost by the way). There might have been alchohol involved in the purchase too. The tan and green camo came from a forum member that might have been deep in the alchohol with me. Cool

Happy New Year, fellows!! Although I could not imbibe the "bubbly liquid", I did see the most spectacular fireworks show I have ever seen at midnight last night. I was at 35000 feet over south Florida when all the festivities began...and what a show! The display at Disneyworld/Epcot Center was simply outstanding. At that altitude you can see for a hundred miles and with the clear night it seemed like the entire state was erupting. Every city and town was crackling with light. Beautiful.

Although I had a bad year in 2004 with not one new helmet, my 2005 collecting year more than made up for it. I managed to locate 5 black SS helmets to add to my bevy of beauties. I also picked up two Waffen-SS examples which I moved on to other collectors.

My 2005 additions;

1. early Allgemeine-SS, possibly used by Standarte colour parties;
2. lightweight aluminum parade with reversed decals and "fat runes" shield;
3. SS-VT with stencilled insignia on a German M16 shell;
4. Danish Schalburg Corps SS on an M40; and
5. no decal SS/RZM issue with charcoal-gray anthracite finish.

This year I would be very happy with only one of the following...M18 cut-out, early SS-VT, or early LAH.

Cheers,

Darryl

PS - great helmets, guys.
PPS - Cody, I believe your M40 three colour camo is on an NS shell.

Big Grin That was an amazing number, compared with only one in 2004, which came from Kelly. None of them came from Kelly last year. (I know some forum members had that luck. Wink) From Top to Bottom: EF64, CKL64, Q66, and Q66DD. Unfortunately, none of them are parade or minty. It just happened to be all well-worn combat. I wonder what I can find this year. Roll Eyes

Hi, Tonym, what's the decal underneath the right side of your double-runic? Are both decals field-applied AT THE SAME TIME? Would appreciate more description. Certainly, looks fine to me, though. Smile BTW I notice your DD is on Kelly Hicks' SS HELMET: A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE. A nice solid collection!

Posted By: tonym Re: 2005 Round-up - 01/08/2006 02:51 PM
Thanks Darryl and Shu. Sorry for the poor pic`s, done in a bit of a rush. The decal underneath the runes is another set of runes. I think both were applied in the field, probably started as a SD with factory applied decal and then both pocher decals were applied in the field. These are my assumptions, would like to hear if you guys agree.
Tony
Posted By: tonym Re: 2005 Round-up - 01/08/2006 02:57 PM
Shu you are correct, it is the same helmet from Kelly`s book. I was lucky enough to have a friend in the US do some research in the archives, as this helmet is named to Heinz Schwering and I had some great news. He was a member of Totenkopf division , a officer and I have 20-30 documents with 3 photo`s of him on there way too me. 2 of the photo`s are portraits with the last being a pic of him in his full black Allegemeine uniform with totenkopf cuff title.

A wonderful round-up Mario! Wink Your Army DD looks perfect. That's a great score.

Tony, sorry for my elementary question - what's the maker of the double-runic(To be exact, that's the triple decal SS, thenBig Grin)? In theory, the first decal underneath should be the one that corresponds to the shell maker, so it's not supposed to be a Pocher shield. Check it out. Smile

Jesus, Tony, I would appreciate you post the photos of the Totenkopf officer with brief information of his combat record, if possible. I think that's a great bonus added to the already famous helmet.

Posted By: tonym Re: 2005 Round-up - 01/08/2006 03:52 PM
Hi Shu,
the helmet is an ET, I cannot make out the maker of the decal underneath the pocher.
The information on the owner of the M35 will not be with me for about a couple of weeks, my friend still has to send it too me but I will post all the info and pics as soon as they arrive, as well as better pics of the helmet.

Hi Shu,
Here is the info my friend sent me on the owner of the M35.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tony,

As promised here's the info I found on Heinz Schwering (born 9 Jan 1912). First, there were about 8 guys named Schwering in the Waffen-SS. Only one had the name Heinrich (a.k.a Heinz). Based on the info in the 20-30 documents I analyzed related to him he was not in Deutschland, but a Hauptscharführer in the SS-Totenkopf. Most of his documents indicate he was stationed at Konzentrationslager (Kzl) Sachsenhausen. There were about 20-30 docs on him (includes some family tree info for racial purity on him & his wife) and 3 pics of him (a straight-on head shot, profile, and kick-ass full body shot in his Allg-SS uniform with what looks like a Totenkopf cuff-title).

Hi Tony, if it's an ET shell, we can safely assume the decal is ET. Particularly, the decal underneath shows a yellowish tint of lacquar, which is a sign of its factory application. To me, everything's explainable here. Thanks Tony for the info. on the man. I think there's a chance still he was in a fighting unit too, considering his age and years of service. Hope you'll find more.

Now that the helmet has arrived here is a new pic sans grill. Wink Helmet has been brush-painted with the decal being painted around. Seller reports the helmet was dispatched home by a Canadian veteran.

Beautiful FJ helmet, Tony. Let's see the guts please.

Cody...cool helmet. A Canadian vet you say? Possibly from the Italian campaign then since the 1st Cdn Div fought down there.

Cheers,

Tony,

You're welcome. I have a resizing program that works wonders. It is a valuable tool for forums such as this one where the size limits are very small.

Again...a wonderful helmet.

Darryl,

What resizing tool do you use? I use the Photoshop tool.

Cody,

I have a program called "GIMP" which my son installed for me a few years ago. It's great.

Well, I did only bought one helmet 2005. I didnt got any before so it sthe first helemt to!.

Let me explain. I am not into this trench findings and this helmet looks more of an surplus or deserted item. Why? There is no battledamage to it, no other damage what I can see. Only stripped and rusty.

(the only helmet I will afford with teh prices going up all the time...)

Cheers
/Thomas

I use MGI photosuite 4 - which is about 5 years old now.

You pull up the image and pick the size you want and it reduces it with minimal loss.

Dave, if I'm not mistaken, that's a nice looking 1939 production Q62. Is that a vet pick-up piece? Love to see the runic side. Smile

Some stunning helmets are shown here. Since I am a student, I couldn't afford too much helmets and other regalia last year, but I was able to acquire this helmet (I am still thankful to the person who gave me the opportunity to obtain it from him). Unfortunately, I had to let it go already after some months, but I still regret selling it. Here it is, an original and complete RZM helmet with a dark gun-blue finish. It is named twice.

So.... After a 10+ year hiatus from this forum, I thought I'd revisit.... I revived this old thread to see where some of these helmets now reside. It was rather entertaining to see some of these images..... Enjoy!!

Tom,

Great idea. You may have to prime the pump a little to get thing flowing.

Here is one my two helmets. My very first military purchase at 6 years old. $4 at the flea market in the northern suburbs of Paris in 1949.

Two faults - the head of the eagle on the scepter is gone and the chin strap was broken in the middle.

Otherwise, the pieces are all there, including the cover. I later found out that cover is worth as much as the helmet. The numeral once sewn to the front of the cover is gone but threads remain.

Andy,

Nope

1949 - My father worked for a machine tool manufacturer and we moved to France. Grandma gave me $5 and we visited the flea market in the North of Paris. I blew $4 on that helmet and I still have it.
