I have read articles that the farmers in France still come accross unexploded shells from WW 1 while plowing their fields!

Rick, you are correct.

Unfortunately, when the "come across" those shells they can be injured or killed as some are still capable of detonation. It is even worse in hilly country as rainfall will expose shells, grenades and the like ... including poison gas shells. There are still a few people killed by WWI poison gas. These shells have almost rusted through and lost most of their pressure, not not quite all.
