Hope you get a answer, I have heard all the reasons, still without reason.
A funeral dagger would be out for me because, for instance the Luftwaffe, had a LOT of funerals, not many black daggers. Same for Heer and Navy.
They are supercool looking though.
The knowledgeable ones will help out I hope.

Black grip Navy daggers first appeared as the Model 1919. They replaced the Imperial style Navy dagger. The pommel used was the ball with waves and reeds, and the cross guard had the fluted ball ends. These were called "Mourning Daggers" due to the losses suffered by the Navy during WW1. In initial production, the tang was peened over the top of the pommel and the dagger could not be disassembled. For the Model 1921, the pommels were threaded and screwed on to the tang, and a new scabbard was introduced. The white grip appeared on the model 1929 or 1st Model Navy dagger. The eagle and swaz was introduced as the 2nd Model Navy dagger in 1938. Earlier daggers could still worn by simply replacing the pommel with the eagle and swaz.
Concerning this special dagger shown here it seems to be (for me) a mixture of parts. The scabbard seems to me beeing from EICKHORN(?), the green washer would fit to a PUMA dagger, the black grip has two different kinds of wire wrapping, unmarked, plain blades commonly are used in daggers which can be surely linked to the WKC company, so I am not very certain that this dagger has been produced in this configuration in a firm.

Hello decent conditioned dagger regardless........................ the black grips really make any dagger just "snap" dont they? Guess that's why Bahnschutz are sooooooo desirable and popular cheers, Ryan
