Hey Guys,

Here's a question I have been pondering about? Did the company of August Merten ever make army daggers?? Or has anyone here ever seen one before?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dion

I've never heard of one or seen one

I still have Denny Roach's old Army list and it is not there.

On the other hand, there are probably one or two maker s out there we are not aware of.

Dion - do you have any reason to suspect one exists ?

I know that at least one example of an Aug Mertens 2nd luft exists out there. So, that being the case, there is no reason that a Heer shouldn't.

John,

If you know who own that Luftwaffe dagger, ask them to post it please

Hi Dave,

No not really, but there was a statement made here in Germany on a group by someone who was showing a SA dagger with that maker, who mentioned that this maker also made Army daggers.
I did answer to that thread and mentioned that I, as an army dagger collector, have never heard of August Merten ever making Army daggers. I just wanted to make sure that my statement had been true!

regards,
Dion

Very true what you say. There are always exceptions to the rule and definitely could be the case that A. Merten made a one off dagger on a special order, but it was not the rule that they manufactured 100's of them. I think that there could be alot of one off daggers that were made on special order. One particular army dagger came here to light from an old age home, by a maker that I have never heard of. Was a very interesting piece, but unfortunately I have forgotten the name and have no pics. It is however pictured on the Militaria fund forum (Mff) in Germany.

Hello, concerning the firm "August Merten Witwe" (owers at 1939 were Erich, Friedrich an Werner Merten) the Solingen swordsmith which did inherit, sum up and continue A.Carters ideas, thoughts and notations states: "...During the Third Reich a few early army daggers were made, alongside some SA and NSKK daggers bearing the "M" and oakleaves above the firmĀ“s name...."

Are you speaking about the one-of-a kind HARTKOPF army dagger?

Hi Wotan,

I'm not entirely sure whether it was that one, but it seems to ring a bell? Like I mentioned, It was last year sometime when this piece came to light and at the moment I'm not a paid up member to the MFF site, so cannot access the pics or the thread it related to.

Cheers,
Dion
