I looked at a beautiful Army dagger yesterday seller did not want very much for it he claimed it was an early Eickhorn but the maker mark was etched instead of the small double oval stamp. Also the blade looked like it was made yesterday did I do good by walking away from it?

Etched EICKHORN mmarks, either the double oval(!) or the "normal", larger, squirrel with sword, are totally ok for IIIR period armies. Only the small squirrel with sword and the squirrel looking over the shoulder mark (both are looked at as late marks) are stamped on IIIR armies.
Early, period blades, when well preserved, can look like made yesterday.
So the dagger described by you easily can be period but without pics nobody can say for sure.
