is it best to display daggers w/ WWII portepee that are frayed ? or get those "un-issued, original, pre-1945" portepee I see for sale?

nurseswim,

It would be my opinion that the condition and age of things match as much as possible.

If the portepee was with the dagger I would let it be attached as it was for the last 60+ years. Just my personal opinion.

Agree with Wotan; leave accoutrements in place and as found to preserve your dagger's history.

nurseswim, so it is easy, as Nietsche stated, look for a portepee which resembles the overall condition of the dagger best. For unissued, best conditioned daggers it is even an option to lay an unissued, still unopened portepee next to the certain dagger.
