from time to time one has to look at the important things.

TR collectors always talking about a 1st and 2nd model, they do refer to 1929 and 1938 pattern daggers. That is more than wrong. German history lasted much longer than 12 years. So a true 1st model dates back to the 1800`s.

No doubt, collecting different makers of 1938 daggers could be fun. But that's not history. A true collector has to do a deep look into history.

So my idea is to show an interesting German dagger from around 1850's. One of the very few with an etched blade, I'm aware of two of them, worldwide.

There is no such thing like a 'flaming ball' pommel. What we see is a reed-bundle with meandering waves. Reed-bundles where used in old times as anchor- signal- and life-bouy.

Collectors should be aware of the balluster-shaped ivory grip of these 1848 pattern daggers, as well as the V-shaped scabbard end.

Sorry to bother you with my way of thinking, but I believe a voice in the wilderness should be heard from time to time. ;-)

Please notice the sophisticated details on the hand work.

Hermann, thanks for posting this extremely rare and beautiful dagger. Interesting info too. I learned something new. I hope more pre TR naval daggers will be posted in this thread.

Hermann, here is an imperial dagger I am quite proud of. It is named and researched. I hope it is OK to post it here.

Wow Jim, what a beautiful dagger! I just love these imperial pieces. Too bad they are so difficult to find these days. I hope more of them will be posted here. Here's a small contribution from my collection.

Simply amazing!

I love these early pieces and would so like to get one some day. I saw a number on herman historica the other day but
bidding was out of the question because most of the lots were in the USA and would attract a ridiculous import tax to the U.K. as well as create a possible problem with the ivory grips.

Guy those are very nice Naval's. I hope that i will get something like that as my collection changes over to all Navy from German. But first, i half to upload what is not needed. Then I'm going after your style of daggers!
