I am not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about this blade. With that said I know zero about Damascus. The COA is as good as the person who issued it can you tell us who that was? I know we have several members who know these blades maybe they will offer their expertise.
Very very strange looking. There are parts that look like real damast steel, other parts do look like a "normal", plain blade and again other parts do look like a simply ground dug rusty blade. never have seen anything like this before.
As there are parts that do look like real damast I dare to assume that it is an extremely rough and unprofessionally made damast blade. But this is only an assumtion and due to thse bad pics. I also would be interested in this certain coa.
Although I am stricktly against disambling itms (sometimes we cannot do without), did you have it already apart and if yes, did you do pictures of the tang?
I have sent a pm to DAMAST and would be pleased about any comment by him.
Regards,
Hi guys thanks for the intrest i did take pics of the tang and will post with this,i share your opinion wotan this blade does look very rough i thought this when the dagger was originally sent to me about 2-3 months ago but never reely went into it as i had the coa with the dagger ,the dagger was purchased from a dealer called snyders militaria of whom you guys will probably know of, and is garanteed to be original so hopefully he would take it back. i will post pics of tang and 1 or 2 more of blade. Thanks for your help guys - much appreciated -Dodge

Again I think these are no good pictures for any foundation of a serious statement.
But: Try a search with "snyder" in our "find" function....
Regards,
synders reputation is very poor he is known to not know what he is doing. I wouldn’t buy a toilet plunger from the guy.

If thats from Snyder maybe its time for the old age home for him..
should i sent it back to him and get my money back guys?on the coa it says this was found by the 101st airborne i will email him and ask hit to prove this or i want my money back........thanks guys
In my opinion this is not a period blade. It is damascus steel. But it has only been layered. Normally at this point a die was used to impress a pattern. This would deform the layers. The blank is then ground flat to cut trough the layers and create the regular patterns we normally see. If damascus without the impressed pattern was used, it consisted of many more layers, and was ususlly used on blades that dont have a flat.( cutting through the layers at an angle shows the pattern here, a flat would mainly show a single layer of steel as in the example in question). A light acid etching cuts into the softer layer to reveal the pattern. This blade has been way over etched. A blade like this would never have come out of any of the manufacturers shops.

I agree 100% with WW2-Collector. Tom is right on. Get your money back from Snyder as fast as you can, if you can.

While you can have madian hair style period blades (that you do not use steel stamps dies or remove material with files and than finish forging for rose ladder etc...........) This one is modern . The blade was just made by a novice smith...
Buy the book Damascus steel Manfred Sachse!!!
always on e-bay
Seen some nice things in damascus at the MAX..

There is no Doubt he will give you your money back but Honestly he should have known better than to push the envelope with this piece...its very Clearly Postwar.
This blade has been over etched and buffed/sanded to death.

Even if it was period(doubtful)the value in this degraded(ruined)condition would be minimal.

Bad as the day is long...send it back. Too easy to excuse Charlie by stating that he does not know what he is doing....He has been in this hobby long enough and has enough contacts to know whether something he is selling is either good or bad. One must use common sense. When I buy an item that I know little about I seek the advice of those that are knowledgeable, this is especially true if I intend to sell it or have invested a large sum in its purchase or if the item represents a significant cash return or value. Dealers are people as well and they often do the same thing that all of us do. It is human nature Wink Wink get your money back and be suspect of all damast, especially those not having tang marks and those not having an ivory handle. No guarantees with either but reason to be more suspicious than usual. Invest in some reference books, cheers, Ryan
