I know someone who is trying to sell this trench coat. I might be able to list it for sale on here for him but what is it worth do you think?

I SEE A GRAY LEATHER COAT. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT IS SS?

I have no experience in clothing at all! someone I know offered it to me and asked for help selling it and told me it was a leather SS jacket.

Is it not then? what is it ? so I break the news to him.

Thanks

Since it does have the assets for incorporating a pair of shoulder boards I would say it might be Luftwaffe. I've seen a gray leather coat like this with slip on SS-Obergruppenfuhrer shoulder boards on it. So it could be Waffen-SS too. I guess it depends upon which shoulder boards are mounted on it.

Can you show it where you have seen such an exactly same coat worn from the SS? It is not about the boards it is about bit more the this.

My friend had years ago a trunk with an SS officers belongings in it.. It had this almost exact leather coat in it except his had SS officers shoulder boards on it and I think [could be remembering wrong here] an embroidered SS arm eagle..
I had told him to sell everything as a group ONLY.. He didn't..
Item after item sold ,all original ,all good original SS tunic, pants, undershirts, personal belongings etc...

Know what he has left? Big Grin,,,,know what he'll probably never be able to prove is a real SS leather coat? Big Grin,,anyway,,he still has it. Years later, only thing left from the trunk.......

Great do you think you will be able to get some pictures?...
Posted By: mongobongo Re: SS Leather trench coat value - 04/14/2008 10:02 PM
He is a really genuine chap, I know that does not give provinence but he is trustworthy so I know he at least bought it as an SS Trench coat some years ago and paid a lot of money for it.

If there are any other pictures we need of any parts please let me know.

Thanks again for your help so far

with no provenance, it's a 40s 50s leather jacket, maybe german in manufacture, $150-$250 Eek

For me it is and is for sure a private leather coat, all original SS leather coats I know about show different features.

I reference also to M.Beavers SS Uniform book p.538 ... For sure some other SS collectors will have the same answer.

The reverse belt closure if wrong and does not make it an SS coat nor the french cuff closure are right. How many botton rows has this coat?

Robert is correct,,, wrong cuffs [the only SS ones in wear Iv seen are the French style ] and incorrect belt attire for an SS-Mantel !
Posted By: mongobongo Re: SS Leather trench coat value - 04/15/2008 06:17 AM
What do you think it is then?
Posted By: Gaspare Re: SS Leather trench coat value - 04/15/2008 01:34 PM
It is what it is,,,a old private purchase leather coat..
Could have been worn by a SS man,,or anyone else that had the money to buy it!.. Without provenance difficult if not impossible to sell..
If its very inexspensive, and you must have it, it'd make a nice display piece to put with other overcoats or with an large ensemble/group..

The first coat is a civilian cut, as noted, used from the 1940s through the 1960s. Definitely not made for the military or SS, although it could have been purchased for wear by anyone during the wartime or postwar period.
The one above from the dealer's site is made properly for a military coat, used by the Army, Luftwaffe, KM, and SS. However, the SS label he pictures from somewhere inside the coat is fake. The coat may or may not be original (these have also been reproduced) and only a hands on examination would allow a valid decision. The SS label is certainly not cause for great confidence!

I've double checked with my friend that owns the SS-Obergruppenfuhrer gray leather overcoat and it looks just like Gaspare's including the belt on the back. It has a snap out lining for added warmth and a Dresden tailor's label.

The officer corps, including the Waffen-SS, were given a clothing allowance to buy their uniforms, including raincoats and leather overcoats such as these. They had the freedom to chose and purchase what they wanted. That is why you see so many Waffen-SS officers wearing M36 style tunics, and not the classic SS M1937 style. The M36 was the preferred choice.

Sorry, double post!

Bill,
Which coat are you referring to? I only see the civilian one and the one Gaspare posted with the fake label.

The one that I'm talking about is like Gaspare's except it doesn't have the hokey SS label, just the tailor's label from Dresden.

Okay, thanks. Sounds like a textbook example of the military style. I had one long ago that had a long zipper pocket under the lower front flap for holding maps or other papers.

Many of those long leather civilian greatcoats, exactly like the gray one that started this thread, were brought into the U.S. circa 1974 by John C. McPherson of Houston, TX. I still have his old 1974 Listing of 9 coats. Other listings were sent to me, as he found more of the same. They came in gray, dark green, dark brown, & black. Prices ranged for one in good shape @ $55, & for ones in exc. shape @ $70. Once in a while one of these pops up touted as original Nazi.
