Hello, derjager! Good idea! There does'nt seem to be much interest in these lanyards but I think they're neat and really "dress-up" a tunic. Here is mine on a "signals" waffenrock. I believe it is the early 1936 style without swords. Regards, teufel

hey,

i am not really familiar with these....I have seen them a lot...but am ignorant about their wear.

Did SS get these too, or did they have to wear that sleeve diamond with the bullseye on it. Now, that sleeve diamond I havent seen much.

These are great items to collect.Still inexpensive and a lot of collecting if you try collecting all of them.Army,Panzer,Luft and Navy.My first one was in a group of items I bought. It was a Luft very high grade with 2 flak shells.Shea gave me some info on it.Some day I'll learn to post photos Cool
Posted By: Gaspare Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 01/04/2006 05:07 AM
C.J.Conley, pretty sure these were just for the Wermacht- Heer,Luft, and KM..

Ryan , you could go with either the first or second pattern Heer like in Joes first photo, with no shells or they could have the metal shells on them..

My last one, sorry about the photo but its pinned shut in an old cracked glass display case.

A Panzer, first pattern with 2 metal shells..

I saw one of these a long time ago and turned it down because (better safe than sorry) the "armored"/ panzer lanyard looked like it was made of zinc or a kreigsmetal and the pins were brass wire.

could someone post a few pics of the "unmounted"/ unsewn lanyards?

I would like to see how they were made so if I run into one again.....its mine.

As to qualification regulations the only reference I remember that refers to them is J.R. Angolia's, For Furher and Fatherland Military Awards of the Third Reich Vol.1, I can not at present quote from that volume.

--dj--Joe
Posted By: Raymond Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 01/09/2006 05:46 PM
Joe, go right ahead and copy them.I just wish they could be of a better quality.
To quote from "For Führer and Fatherland","Each individual was required to qualify at each level or class with only one qualification recognized per year. Thus, it would require three years to qualify for the highest award.
"The award was rendered for excellence in shooting with the carbine, rifle, light MG and MG. Small arms qualifications consisted of a combined score with the rifle and MG,with minimum standards required at each grade. For example, awards 1-4 required that only four of six rifle rounds be in the bullseye at each of the three ranges, while 9-12 required five of six hits in the bullseye."

Thank you also for posting the qualification info.

--dj--Joe
Posted By: TKissinger Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 01/10/2006 06:08 PM
So i assume that everyone had to qualify, so if you qualified at the highest level it didn't count. I guess there is a lot about this I don't understand, guess I better get some more reference material.

Lou Bell, sorry it took me so long to reply to your question. Considering the items to be in excellent condition in my opinion a good pricing rule of thumb might start at $60.00 for grade 1 and add $15.00 increments for each grade up to grade 12.

--dj--Joe
Posted By: derjager Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 01/22/2006 07:55 PM
My post on pricing is in reference to Heer lanyards. Panzer lanyards would in my opinion rate higher and I do not know where Luftwaffe lanyards fall price wise.

Sorry for any confusion, again I knew what I was thinking, just didn't come across on the written page. Wink

If anyone out there is into Luftwaffe lanyards would you please be so kind as to check and see if any have the protective covering to the long twisted cording section? It does not appear that the ones deptcted have it.
I just yesterday held a really nice 5th grade and it did not have the covering. Only the felt behind the upper part.

DJ ,I do agree with you on the color. The reason I said possible HJ was info from a long time N.Y. collector. Also the lanyard is only 13" from end to end were as a standard one is 17".It also could be for a "junior" member of Foresty ?,I don't know if HJ was active in the foresty.

Hi Chris,it's good to hear from you again. It's been awhile since I've been to Delaware but, next time I'm down that way I'll let you know.Maybe the Pikesville show. I don't remember having an SS poster but, between having a bad memory and way to much stuff it's possible Confused Frown.
From what I know it looks like the piece has been replaced with the lower grade one.The device is for a grade 5 thru 8 and the lanyard is a grade 10.The color looks like silver with a coating of laquer that has yellowed over the years(this is why mine looks gold in the photo but silver in person). It could have been done wartime as mistakes do happen. How does the backing material look?It wouldn't be hard to replace it with the higher grade piece if you wanted. It still looks good the way it is now.

Mike ff, that is indeed an interesting Heer lanyard. It could be feasible that old stock was implemented to fill a demand. Does the gilt wash appear old? It looks old from the image. Does the backing material appear undisturbed? All we need is a period picture to verify such practise.

Here's one I can't identify, it was hiding with the Navy. The disc is smaller, the lenght is shorter but the cord/knots are thicker. When I first bought it I thought HJ but looking in my books, the HJ didn't use these. Any ideas?

--dj--Joe
Posted By: Raymond Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 02/06/2008 01:44 AM
Joe, I looked in Benders series on the Kriegsmarine and the acorn is in the same place as the Army. i laughed when you wrote torpedo but it does say "A 5cm long torpedo of 1 cm diameter cords intertwined blue and aluminum." Now that I would like to see. I think the hook is for attaching the top of the lanyard to the tunic. The Kriegsmarine uniforms don't have shoulder straps to hid the attachment button. I haven't looked at many Kriegsmarine uniform. Maybe at the next show.

According to For Fuhrer and Fatherland Navy Awards above Grade 4 had a metal shield with an anchor surrounded by oak leaves.They also had acorns ( different colors) winged shells , shells , and torpedos.The colors for the items were ;
1st Award - Black
2nd Award - Silver
3rd Award - Gilt
This is a great post and hopeful people will post items.Glad to see it has been revived

Lanyards are great aren't they.

Here are 2 of mine. What about the green one - is it a fake??

I'm looking for a high grade infantry and one with the metal shells if any one has one to spare.

I found this thread when looking to see if anyone had posted anything on Imperial Marksmanship lanyards (No luck, unfortunately).

Have a look at my Kriegsmarine lanyard, with single acorn.

Air Force Base Grade

And the subject that brought me to this. An imperial one for comparison. It is Prussian (because threads are red, white and black) and infantry or artillery (cavalry ones were worn on the opposite side). It is the base grade. Like KM ones in WW2, the base grades do not have a badge.

This cord is worse for wear, unfortunately, but still interesting.

Since this thread started, an excellent reference book on the subject has been published. It is called "Bulls-Eye" and written by Neil G Stewart and Lt Col (Ret) Timothy J Curley.

Well worth getting (I do not know the authors or have any interest in the book. I just liked it)

Back of the imperial is odd. There is a fabric covered plate behind the rosette only. No rubbing strip to protect the majority of the cord (and it looks like it needed it).

I'm glad you found this thread. smile Thank you for showing your lanyards.

I was thinking somewhere on the forum there are some Imperial shooting lanyards. I haven't run across them yet but will continue to look as time allows. They may be in the archives.

I actually have a few army lanyards as well, but couldn't be bothered posting them. There are lots of photos of them here, and mine are nothing special.

David, thank you for the heads up on the reference book. I was not aware of it.

I'll keep looking for the Imperial lanyards.

Good tip, thank you. I haven't had an opportunity to look through that collectors reference. Does it cover the Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine lanyards?

Posted By: derjager Re: Marksmanship lanyards. - 05/16/2012 02:11 AM
I see your Kriegsmarine lanyard has the accepted 14 knots. Back on page 10 Raymond posted an example with 17 knots. I learn as I go so I now know the 17 knot to be a Bundeswehr period lanyard. I haven't heard from Raymond for awhile to let him know.

On page 11 Z06Berlin posted a 14 knot example with a single acorn on a jacket.

Bringing this thread from the past.

Here is my top-rare KM lanyard, unfortunately incomplete as 4th grade should have gilded shell with wings or torpedo.
Below is the complete one from eMedals inventory, unfortunately sold way before I saw it :-(

Something not generally known:

German Marksmanship Lanyards may be earned by US Army personnel, but only worn by enlisted men (E1 - E9) on their dress uniforms.

Other US Military Branches I don't know.
