This dagger has the correct, smaller makermark and all of the typical Aesculap features ( lackered grip, very dark motto, ...).

By the way, Paul, I have seen several SA Röhm daggers without a "gau" stamp on the guard.

But what happened to the top scabbard fitting of this dagger?

Looks like a nice, scarce original. The grip appears to have perhaps been coated with varnish, lacquer, etc., but that is not a serious problem, if the case. The absence of a gau mark is nothing to be concerned about. You see such occasionally on political daggers.

All Aesculap grips have that: it is a typical feature of that maker.

And I would call it rather "very rare", if even Ron has never seen one...

I agree Hermann, no Gau stamp is quite fine and does not mean a problem. A present Gau stamp though when it's correct is clue to authenticity.

Ralf Siegert, ("SA Service Daggers" page 194 of English language edition,) includes Aesculap in his list of verified manufacturers of the Roehm honour dagger. Ralf does not picture an actual example. Desirable dagger, congrats.

I really like this dagger certainly has a lot character,I have spent a lot of time admiring this,Thanks for showing.I really like the custom vertical hanger adds another tale to it's story.If only these daggers could talk.

i think this maker put a varnish on the handles. i had one and it also had a varnished handle.paul
