Hi All,

Ive just joined as i require some help with getting a rough valuation on a knife i have.

It appears to be a SA Rohm, made by Solingen (SMF), the blade is in need of care but am unsure what to do other then keep applying renasaince wax gently when its opened.

The pictures can be viewed at here:-

Looks like a very nice unmessed with early SMF. I am unfortunatly no Rohm etch pro so wait for the guru's to chime in! Thanks for showing!! Kevin.

Come on guys, I recommended Slurm post pictures of his dagger here as I know there several very experienced collectors on the forum when it comes to the Rohm inscription.
Opinions as to authenticity and a rough valuation would be appreciated.......this is a full Rohm we are talking about.

A few of the pictures available from Slurms link are posted below.

Nice scabbard, rough blade. Looks authentic. Blade may or may not clean up some. SMF may be a scarce maker for a "Rohm." Check "big dealer" sites and see what they are listing them for. Adjust value appropriately. Several thousand, probably.

Are you guys sure that inscription looks good??? Im no expert on these.... I know that the small SMF mark would be correct for a rohm but the inscription looks off to me, it isnt the same darkness as the makers mark and also the letters look a bit too chunky. It doesnt look very crisp at all!!! Also where is the crossgrain??? JMO....... Gailen will know for sure.

Good luck

I agree with Addy.
I do not like it.

It is possible that some kind of polishing has rounded the edges of the inscription, but still… it does not look right to me…

Gailen?

Thanks for the opinions chaps, I am sure Slurm would be happy to post additional pictures of any part of the inscription / dagger should they be needed.
It is always hard to judge such a piece from pictures alone as light and angles etc all come into play.

I think Slurm may be better contacting Gailen direct if he hasnt already done so!!! In the meantime i will post a pic of one of mine for comparison, note the crispness of the letters!!! if you put them side by side you should be able to see what im talking about. The SMF in question kind of looks like it was done with a blunt pencil IMO.

Thats rather strange for sure lol, mine has been viewed on this forum a few times now and all the guys in the know give it the thumbs up. Full Rohms by HACO are very rare to say the least but i beleive so are SMFs. The thing i dont like about the SMF is the bluntness of the letters. I have another full Rohm by Eickhorn thats been sharpened and re-tipped but is definately real, and the inscription on that is also crisp, i will post a pic so you can see the similarities.

Sorry, but I´ve meant that if the inscription on your dagger is original, I would see the other one as legit as well. I didn´t want to question the authenticity of your dagger. Sorry for my confusing wording.

Rohm SA's by the maker marked SMF are extremelly rare but this one has no obvious red flags and seems 100% original in my humble opinion.
I like the way the maker marked is very close to the lower crossguard, which is not the case on an un-Rohm dagger, I also like the fact that it is Gau marked NO, which is correct.

All in all, pretty sure that it is genuine.

Pat,
I was hoping you would voice an opinion. You have basically re-affirmed my initial impressions on this dagger as being good and I think congratulations are in order for the owner of this piece.
The point raised regarding the motto not being as crisp and sharp as some examples does vary between manufacturer I have found and is quite evident on normal SA daggers but it is a point well raised all the same.

Regarding the light brown rust spots, if you take a leaded pencil and gently rub over the raised corrosion areas it will remove the worse of the rust. Other than that I suggest you leave it as is and maybe just apply renwax being careful around the trademark and mottos/inscription.

Not a problem Ivbaust, I tried to research the Haco the best i could before i purchased it, due to the price i wanted to make sure that everything was as cosher as possible before i handed over the ££££.And we all know in this day of age it pays to be cautious especially when it comes to full rohms. Pat thanks for your humble opinion, looks like the SMF in question may be good after all, if you and Ivbaust dont see any red flags then it appears all good, Maybe im just a bit paranoid. The first photo of the full blade on the SMF the inscription looks ok to me (for what its worth) it was just the last photo of the maker mark and the Rohm signature looked too chunky, but maybe its just the way the photo was taken? This is the 1st full rohm by SMF i have seen so it could also be the way they were?

Thanks again for your input guys
Regards Adam

I will be the 1st to say it as i was the one who originally cast doubt over the dagger in question. Apologies for that but it pays to be a little bit paranoid in our hobby, im sure most will agree....

Anyways congratulations Slurm on your new SMF full Rohm smile

The fact that the motto doesn't seem as sharp as I think, may be due to the fact that the blade has been heavily cleaned or polished at one time, difficult to say without a hand inspection.
Other than that, nothing wrong with it.
