is f dick a know maker of sa daggers with the rohm inscription?
Posted By: nats Re: f dick rohm - 05/11/2005 05:17 PM
Hello nickn, yes F Dick is a known Rohm maker, regards nats
Posted By: Anonymous Re: f dick rohm - 05/11/2005 08:28 PM
Yes, they did. Interestingly, the The F. Dick mark should be running in line with the inscription, rather than perpendicular to it. You would think it would have been the other way around to allow more room for the inscription, but it's not.

i have been offered a nice rohm f dick not mint but exc + for 2400 $4000 is that what they are now fetching?

F. Dick is one of the rarest makers of the Roehm, maybe the rarest. The price is below the current market price and the F. Dick has never been reproduced as of yet.

Yes, I believe "Dick" did make a few SA Rohm Daggers.

Nickn,
Would you happen to have a photo of the blade with the inscription?

Regards, Dan J.

Nickn, it is very interesting to see a photo.
Something such as it?

Yes, the placement of the TM and the inscription are exactly like mine. Nice condition. Mine is mint.

There are fake F.Dick Rohm's out there. At least one. That's the one i had for two days, about two years ago.Posted it on the forum and it was bad.The etching was done postwar. The pictures i belive is long gone from this forum now,but i remember that the maker mark was too far from the guard. It was a standard Dick SA with a bogus etching.

There's a good chance it is what you say, enlargement and inspection of photo reveals it is not a re-etch but a Rohm inscription on an SA dagger by F Dick. There is a noticeable difference between the burnish in the trademark and the inscription so the possibility exists.
It would have helped to have the edge of the crossguard in the photo and also to have the blade perpendicular to the camera rather than at an angle. When you get the right condition of lighting angle etc. You can make a comparison like this one, but still this one could be a lot better.

A photo comparison shows the inscription is a bit farther away from the crossguard than the Eickhorn model. This raises 2 questions.
1. Was the distance from the crossguard an inviolable specification?
2. Why didn't the maker use their other mark which runs at 90 degrees to this one and would leave more space for the inscription.
I am not trying to insinuate anything but just wish to find answers that will help us in the future. Regards, Dan J.

Dan J. This F. Dick TM is unusual in its use. You would think that the TM use would be just the opposite, but no.
I bought mine directly from the veteran who brought it back in Red Oak, Iowa, and paid little.
I have seen a few other originals that all have the TM running with the motto. You can spot an F. Dick Roehm easily and especially the ground ones. This makes Roehm ID easy with this company. Unfortunately, they are hard to find and you see many more of the plain ones with the TM running across the blade.

Thanks a lot Ron just looking for an expert clarification. I have seen the other mark and I also have seen the ground Rohm with the lengthwise mark. The inscription looks exc on this one. I hate to let a thread die with doubts still ringing in the air because I might see one tomorrow and have to pass on it.
There is so much to learn as a collector, after about a 15 year absence, I started going to Gun shows again to get more hands on.
I bought my first SS and SA in 1962 when there weren't a lot of fakes except for the famous HJ knife advertised in magazines of the day.
My next book purchase will be your Clamshell book. I bought a real sweet one from Gailen and I would like to learn more about their history and who wore them.

Thanks Again,
Dan Jacobsen

since Ron just told me this is a grounded rohm SA by F Dick.
I thought it would be a good idea to post a pic in this thread aswell.

According to Ron, the blade has post war plating aswell, seems that this was not uncommon to do back in the days.

Not all F. Dick with that horizontal maker mark are Rohm daggers. I have one F. Dick of each maker mark (horizontal and vertical) and neither is a Rohm. It is not a fact that the horizontal maker mark was meant only for the Rohm inscription.

Mark, not to differ too much, but Joe Pankowski and I have looked at more than 100 SAs by F. Dick and all those with the TM running down the blade have been Roehms, ground Roehms or factory ground Roehms. Maybe you found a factory mistake, but the numbers suggest a pattern in this case.

Ron, anything is possible and I will be bringing the two F. Dick SA daggers to the SOS so we can all have a look. I'll like to see what you and others will think of this dagger. Maybe it is one that slipped thru the cracks.

I find no evidence that my Vet acquired "horizontal F. Dick" was ever a Rohm. Has all original (at time of logo) graingrain present. -wagner-
