Gentlemen,

I'm not certain about this one.
I may be wrong but I think that it is an Infantry Prussian helmet M1848.
Any infos would be most welcome.
Pretty nice condition, considering that this is more than 150 years old. Wink
Any value on this ?
Thanks !

Pat,, I think you are in the ballpark with your m-1848 assessment, but I think it is Bavarian, not Prussian based on the blue ****ade and lion masks. Beautiful helmet.

Hi Pat,

Received your email and this is what I came up with ... Barry was correct calling it Bavarian but I'm not quite sure if the emblem and the plume are appropriate to one another,
I think they are but I'm really not certain? Hopefully someone with a lot more experience with these things will correct me if I'm wrong...

The emblem with the M/sunburst is for Maximilian
II with the years being somewhere around 1848-1864. Regular officers wore a red horse-hair plume as this one has. Jäger troops wore the M-insignia without the sunburst and a grey-green or green upright affair of a brush on the left side.

Hope this will give you more to sink your teeth into, take care and good luck!

Thanks Barry and Bill !
I will try and do some more research on it, now that I know that it is Bavarian ( my favorite German State ) Wink and knowing that it is from the Maximilian era.

According to the book Die Helme Der Koniglich Bayerischen armee 1806-1918 it is indeed a model 1845/48 helmet, the red loose plume is for artillary.

If you have a copy of 'A study of german helmets and uniforms, 1729-1918' from Kube (Schiffer) you can see on page 54 a Bavarian infantry officers helmet Model 1861 with this type of sun emblem.

On page 29 is a model 1845 helmet, version of 1948 belonging to a Jäger without the sun, just the M plus crown.

Hope this helps doing your research
JS.

Thanks JS, I've borrowed the book from a friend of mine and the helmet is indeed inside.

Pat, the book about the bavarian helmets James told about, is the best you can buy and read for the moment. It is written in german, but with a lot of pictures and drawings. Try to buy it.

This is an exmaple for an officers helmet. Yours is for enlisted men.
