hi steve
wow a very nice collection of scarce and rare walther model pp pistols great to see the different designated walther pistols. especially the rare to find ss walther pistol. last year i picked up a very rare walther pistol marked on the right side of the slide C.P.B. this one is hard to figure out i have never seen this abrivation beforeon a walther pp and believe me i had many lugers/walthers/p-38s/mausers of all kinds thru my 50 some odd year in this wonderfull hobby i am a dying breed getting old . i have been in contact with one of the best walther collectors around jow watka if he doesnt bknow what it means then we will have to go to the arcives . i will show him this pistol at the sos show in february and discuss it i only took a guess as to what C.P.B. meant and my own opinion i thought it meant criminal police berlin it is a very early numbered walther pp perhaps its criminal police berlin or perhaps a bank guard i will discuss it with joe we never say never in this hobby and learn something new every day god bless all happy new year andy militarynut

Hi Steve, Thanks for showing your fine "litter" of PP's. These little guys are fascinating to study; research; AND collect.

Andy, I suspect your C.P.B. piece is not Criminal Police Berlin, as the German word for criminal begins with a "K", not a "C". Sorry I can't shed any more info on it. Do you think it is possible it might have been stamped post war? These pistols were very popular with European police and military in the late 40's & 50's. So, in the absence of documentation, we would have to consider this may possibly be a non-NS period marking....
If you bring it to the SOS, I'd love to see it.

Merry Christmas all

hi denny
members i made a error its a ppk not a pp thanks for your post denny on my early walther ppk yes i discussed this fact with joe watka according to dieter marshalls book on earl serial numbered walther ppk s he says early numbered ppk s with C.P.B. on the right side of the slide was Criminal Police Berlin then in later years the walther firm used K for kriminal police im sorry i dont have dieters book at the moment then another point was that the germans were starting to replaceing bank guards pistols from those big clumsy 1800 s revolvers with big bores to walther ppk s and marked as such to this large bank in berlin still a lot of researching to do . i promised joe watka that i will show him this walther pistol first if you or any one wishes to see this walther or the rest of my outher treasure pistols please stop by it would be my pleasure to meet all our members and chat about this wonderfull hobby after all we are the keepers of this great military history best andy militarynut

Thanks all for the kind words.

Andy that type would be a nice one to add someday. are the sites painted on yours and mag numbered like the bank panographed ones?

I'm still on the hunt for a D R P, PDM, panographed bank PP and more than a few others smile I like the odd ones.

I hope everyone had a Blessed Christmas and that a Happy New Year will follow.

Those are some very nice Walthers Steve. Congradulations on your growing collection. The RFV PP is very nice. It is a little known fact, that in 1935 the RFV supplied a limited number of their Walther PPs to the newly formed SS-Higa (Hilfsgrenzschutz) units assisting with border control. A fascinating Walther pistol that does not get much play are those PPKs with the "W" suffix. Produced in 1939, this small odd production run in the late 180,000 and 190,000 range features a "W" suffix instead of the usual "K". Dieter Marschall theorized that the production was early Wehrmacht contract, but of course the individual branches purchased their own weapons and why wouldn't a WaA be found? The change occurred at approximately the time that Walther began a revamped serial arrangement. A variety of suffixes were introduced for different models in order to simplify the serial numbering system. Was this "W" PPK a special contract or simply an error in application of the suffix? More research is necessary.

Dieter proposed the Criminal Polizei Berlin explanation for the C.P.B. marked PPKs and prefaced his theory with the note that the letter C and K were interchangeable into the early 1930s. A marking by the Berlin Police in the time frame of the production of these pistols would have had to follow either the 1932 Prussian Police Orders of Marking. All weapons of the Kriminalpolzei of Berlin would have to be marked "K.B.". And if the markings were pre-1932, they would reflect earlier Berlin Detective Police markings which were P.P.B.IV. The most logical theory for a meaning to C.P.B. is "Commerz-und Privat Bank", a very large regional bank in the 1930s that is still in existence today as Commerz-Bank.

Looking forward to greeting you at the SOS Andy.

Steve, I had left the PP/PPK forum in August 2010 and thus was not able to add the comments above to that particular thread that you posted. I would still stand by my comments and belief that there is no way the marking would indicate Detective Police Berlin. At the time of the manufacture of the C.P.B. guns, the Prussian police were not purchasing Walther products. It seems most new pistols were from Sauer out of Suhl, a Prussian manufacturer.

hi joe
just was noticed at the bottom of your post and you are 1,000 percent correct your words this hobby is a continuing education . reminds me when my friend don boyle ss honor ring man found a ss ring dated 1933 with roman numerals. like the one that member creed had to obersgruppenfuhrer swarz with the diamond in place of the skull the skull fell off so the jeweler did this on his own oh my lord help me im falling. well any way a collector came up to don boyles table saying don was full of donkey poop and didnt know what the hell he was saying that there was no such thing as a ss honor ring dated 1933 with roman numerals the following year don boyle produced proof with a himmler signed letter direct from der reichsfuhrer to the gahr firm who made the honor rings letter dated 1933 indicating to make another 1933 ring with roman numerals . so this is proof of your words joe we all must never say never in this hobby we learn something new every day i did learn something when i bought this rare walther ppk pistol . i never seen anything like this marked C.P.B. in my over 50 years in this great hobby many thanks guys andy militarynut

Sorry you feel that way Andy. I admit the lack of response on some posts does get discouraging, but the purpose is to put the info out there for people. We have discussed your C.P.B. PPK before and there is not much more to add. I did notice that both my ratty condition C.P.B. PPK and my Reichsbank marked PPK are both in the mid 763 xxx range, actually within a few hundred of each other. What was good for the Reichsbank (the most advanced semi-auto pistol available) had to be good enough for other banks to order during this time of civil unrest in Germany. So the Commerz-und Privat Bank ordered a number for their security guards in various German cities. C.P.B. was a very large bank and survived the war, operating today as Commerz-Bank. I contacted their archive department and while they could not comment on the marking, they did admit that private banks at that time in Germany did arm their own guard establishment.

I really cannot comment on your KM pistol Andy. It is a beautiful piece. I am sure you will find a KM marked holster out their somewhere if you look hard enough.

Very nice Walthers shown here. Thank you. Here is an interesting PPK. Often called the Party Leader as it is fitted with the grips bearing the party insignia, though we know that the RZM PPKs were also Party Leader guns. This one is interesting as it was one of ten PPKs awarded to contestants in the Gau Franken Shooting Contest held in June 1939 who were selected to compete in the National Party Day Games Shooting Contest to be held the coming September 1939.

Well we all know what happened. WWII started and of course the games were cancelled. The winners went home with their prizes. There is no question that these pistols are true Party Leader PPKs, as the inscription describes the event that was open only to those Party Leaders possessing sidearms amd qualified to shoot the same. At least two PPKs have been identified in this range of ten guns. Ten guns were also issued for the 1938 shooting match in Gau Franken.

Posted By: Vern Re: Walther PP family - 01/11/2014 08:15 AM
Actually, the clip is for a Walther. It just has a Beretta finger rest bottom piece. The Beretta bottom slides right onto the Walther mag and gives a good grip for a carry gun or target shooting. You just depress the center button on the flat bottom Walther mag, slide the bottom off, and slide the Beretta bottom on. Keep the flat Walther bottom in case you want to change it back to original later. Winchester makes the silver tip hollow point ammo. It has about the best shock effect for a 7.65mm round. I've used it for many years and surprised the heck out of people by knocking down bowling pins with a 7.65mm PPK. With the light recoil of the PPK, I could clear a rack faster than most shooters with their big bore handguns. Rumor has it that the Lone Ranger used Winchester ammo also wink

Gents,

I thought I would present a circa 1966 Walther Model PP 7,65mm police pistol. This pistol is property marked to the Rheinland-Pfalz Polizei and was carried by West German uniformed policemen. The pistol was made by Walther in 1966 in Ulm/Do to the same specifications as the wartime Polizei Pistole. It has commercial (not military) proofs, two proper magazines (one with the plastic finger rest), and a period holster.

The pistol is shown with two examples of Rheinland-Pfalz police uniforms. Both are NCOs with one orange piped for the rural Gendarmerie and the other green piped for the municipal Schutzpolizei. The 7,65 ammunition is period Geco FMJ.

I collect German Police firearms from roughly 1900 - 1990.

Commercial Walther PP and PPK pistols came in a cardboard box which included a spare magazine, an owner's manual, a cleaning rod and cleaning kit, and 3 dummy cartridges. This is a set from 1939. Anyone else want to share?

I thought I would add another member of the Walther PP family that I picked up recently.

This is a circa 1975 example of the Walther PP-Super in Cal.9x18 Ultra/Police. This is the revamped PP (Polizei Pistole) made at the request of the German Police for a caliber somewhere between the 9mm Kurtz and the 9mm Parabelum. It did not last long and while the cartridge was first developed for the Luftwaffe in 1938, it was resurected for the PP-Super which was made between 1972-1979 then discontinued by Walther.

This is a boxed example that is property marked to the Rheinland-Pflaz Polizei on the right trigger guard.

My Christmas present to myself this year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Very nice George,
I do like the look of that one, and I don't think I've ever see one of those. How dose it compare in size to a PP?

I wasn't able to add a new one this year but I hope I can add a nice DRP or PDM next year. or maybe find a P under RSHA PP you never know what can turn up at a show.

Merry Christmas guys,

Here is another pic of the 2nd variation PP RSHA I had on my phone and thought I'd add it.

Steve,

Posted By: ORPO Re: Walther PP family - 12/26/2014 06:52 PM
Thanks Steven. The Walther PP-Super is a bit more beefy than the earlier PP since it is in a 9mm caliber rather than 7,65mm. It won't fit in a standard PP holster because the slide it too wide. As a matter of fact, I am having a heck of a time finding a police issue holster for it since I don't really know what they look like. I just know that this larger PP-Super pistol will not fit into a slimer holster.

P.S. I could use one of those RSHA examples too. grin
