I believe their navy, spike is called a marlin spike to undo knots, and i think it is British. Mike

Thanks guys I appreciate it, came with a bunch of US stuff,vet must have gotton it off a Brit!Is it ww2 era and any idea of value,paid 15.00 for it.

Price is right. I have seen these advertised in catalogues for under $20. Yours appears to be a real vet, based on the number on the grips.

These were issued to the soldiers in a small numbers, like 1 to a platoon or something like that. They normally have a canvas cover w/ belt hook over the hatchet head. Your seems in decent shape. I would think many of them were used up after the war camping & in boy scout camps.

These were still being issued to the Illinois National Guard in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I remember seeing them at the NG armory where my father worked as an Adm. Assistant and recruiter during that period.
