This came off of e-bay 5 years ago.... CHEAP!

I like the fact that there is a name, date and unit. So this could be reserched.

Eric,

Very nice looking dagger, great blade indeed. Don't you just miss the old days of Eban when nice pieces like this could be had, sometimes even at a bargain?
Posted By: Nakida Re: Dedicated & Named SA Dagger - 08/25/2007 06:33 PM
Eric!

Very nice and interesting dedicated dagger!
Can you tell us about the maker? Could this be a factory grounded Rohm?

Sam,
Posted By: Mike McAlvanah Re: Dedicated & Named SA Dagger - 08/25/2007 08:32 PM
What a great piece!-look at the date-June 10 1934-a Rohm then professionally ground after the BIG DAY at the end of the month- most likely a Pack- what is on the tang?? Wonderful, Mike
Posted By: E Rader Re: Dedicated & Named SA Dagger - 08/25/2007 09:10 PM
It is am Anton Wington Jr. (small logo) I do not think it was a Rohm. Dagger have never been apart. My German is a bit rusty BUT it belonged to a Sargent, my guess it was a gift for a possiable promotion???

If I told you what it sold for on e-ban..... you would all cry Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

If the engraving "10/6.1934" is interpreted as a date, I must say that this is quite untypical and unusual for German language. A German would write the date normally as "10.6.1934". The day and the month are normally followed by a dot. A slash inbetween day and month is normally not used in German language.

If my history of the German language is correct, the style used in the 1930's is quite different than modern times. Who knows.....

That is a very nice personalized SA Eric. They used to be around but they are all in collections now. You just don't see them out in the market anymore. Congrats! Smile

Ivbaust raises a good point. SS honor rings are a good example of how dates were inscribed in that period. The Germans did not separate dates with a / in the days the scabbard was allegedly inscribed. Same thing as no first names were put on an SS honor ring. Small detail, but it is very true.

Nice overall dagger, but without direct provenance, it is as Lem Motlow says on every bottle of Jack Daniels.."All goods worth price charged".

10/6 looks more like a unit abbreviation to me. Its also separate from 1934...

of course this abbreviation would fit more with Heer unit abbreviation conventions

Well I guess the vets son I bought it off of must have engraved it just to make extra $$$ Roll Eyes

vonR you could be so right. Thats what these little knombs do.

The engraving looks 100% fine. It's a beautiful piece! Your best bet for research would be to have Robert McDivett check to see if there is a file on the Scharfhrer. I've had good luck working with him for SA member research.
What is the group marking-I can't quite make it out.

Gustavo is correct on the unit designation. The ones I own are all Gau marked Nm or No that are like that. Here is one with the dots between the dates and the one that follow is one with a slash for comparison.

Thanks Mark for posting your examples. I have seen the dates engraved all kinds of ways. And Von Rader's example is 100% period and correct.
A fantastic piece.

That IS a nice one Nats! I wonder what it was First Prize for?

The scabbard runner fitting is very small...I have not seen them like that.

THE NUMBER WITH THE SLASH IS TYPICAL FOR POLITICAL FORMATION UNIT NUMBERS. THERE WEE NINE STANDARTE 6. OF THESE TWO WERE FORMED AFTER THIS DAGGER WAS MADE. SEE IF YOUR GRUPPE MARK MATCHES ALPENLAND, BAYERENWALD, BERLIN-BRANDENBURG, FRANKEN, HESSEN, NORDSEE OR ODER.
10TH STURM OF THE SIXTH STANDARTE.
