Early SA "Christmas" Daggers?? - 01/20/2007 05:05 AM
If you are into SA collecting or have been a collector for a while-you know that some of the early references mention that the first SA's were not standardized. They had mottos with different fonts, some even have blue panels with the motto( oh yes!), some had no SA runics in the grip at all and some had the early pointed wing eagle in the grip. Some may have had leather scabbards with nickel fittings and some had copper scabbards. All are scarce and seldom seen. But here's the thing--as I said-- the early references chalk these differences up to an early lack of uniform standards corrected by early 1934. BUT-of late-some are now calling these "Christmas" daggers given for Christmas. I don't think the Nazi's were big on Christmas so--I wonder--where does the idea come from that these were Christmas presents? It would have to only be for one year? Christmas 1933?--and if that is the case-why so many different kinds and variations even to include Rohms ( All ?? ground-I don't know of any that are intact) Is there some proof or are these just early non standard pieces? Is this another inaccurate term? Another "Funeral" dagger?
