Hi guys,

I am new to the world of German daggers but we all have to start somewhere so be gentle.

I have recently bought an SA/NSKK dagger along with a Smatchet for an excellent price from a mate who was clearing out his mother in laws loft. They stumbled across some boxes of his late father in law, an office in the Canadian army during WW2 and uncovered all of his army possessions.

Anyway the SA dagger is in fairly good condition but the connecting ring on the throat fitting for the hanger is missing.
Do any of you guys know if there is anywhere in the uk i could get his repaired or would it be best to just leave it as is?

Also could anyone confirm if this is an SA or NSKK dagger. The handle appears to have been painted black at the top and bottom?
it is made by Emil Kaiser & Co if that helps.

Thanks

Andy

cool SA, I'm not a dagger guy but usually the black on the handle was not there. But this is a great site for daggers and I'm sure someone will be along to give you some help.. [ They are 100% going to ask for the maker !]

Smatchets were US and English. The English 'OSS' type goes for good money!, and the US WW1 dated examples are nice too. Find the right area here and show a photo of it..
Welcome and have a good time here..

Your best chance will be to keep an eye on eBay for a really beat up SA/NSKK that has the scabbard rings and at leadt one top and bottom screw.

Cheer for the reply Dave.

I have already managed to find some top and bottom screws so they are on order.
The fit between the blad and Throat is perfect and i doubt a replacement will be as good a fit but i think that will be the best option.

A black scabbard is usually the sign of an NSKK dagger. There may be a group mark on the back of the lower crossguard that will identify where and to which group (SA or NSKK) it was issued. Occasionally you will find a political dagger which has had the hanger ring removed so it could be used with a vertical hanger. You could probably find a beat up upper fitting and have the hanger ring silver soldered to your scabbard fitting. A jeweler could do it if you find the ring.

Cheers fr the reply Vern.
This is another option i was thinking of, getting a vertical hanger and putting it in that. the only marking on the cross guard is 'No' which is the SA Gruppe stamp code for Nordsee.

From the quality of the scabbard paint, it does look like something done after the guy transferred from the SA to the NSKK wink

A guy in another forum said that the scabbard and handle might have been painted black because he transferred from SA to SS and they could do this so they did not have to purchase another dagger. Not sure on that one..!

The SS dagger has a different rune button and blade so that is doubtful. While NSKK members initially could wear the SA dagger, an order was issued May 19, 1936 from the Commander-in-chief of the NSKK that all SA scabbards were to be painted black as a distinguishing feature between the SA and NSKK.

Where the hell you guys get your info from amazes me. Thats why i love forums like this, the wealth of info is brilliant..!

Any idea why the handle would be painted as well or maybe just an over zealous German with a tin of black paint? I am going to leave it as it is, i think it would be wrong for me to erase the daggers history.
