I don't like so much grip/crossguards fitting, it's not I spected for a early one, may be grip is not original from this dagger. I can't see the maker marking with clear definition in your pictures.

Crossguard at blade looks like correct Suhl made guard with shallow indentation for grip. I would agree though that grip may have been replaced..Kevin.

Hi Tiff,

Now I see it's a J.P. Sauer & Sohn, a Suhl made dagger were we spected to see only the characteristics "Suhl steps" between grip and crossguards. But not the gaps I see in your dagger, please compare it's grip with these two pictures I collected on the net from another J.P. Sauer and you will understand my opinion.

Best Regards,

Ricardo

Poor grip to crossguard fit, for an early Suhl dagger. Runes button is a replacement as it is not original to the grip,, and not sure of the grip itself as it does not conform to early Suhl wood types. Parts dagger with a replaced grip.

I'm not sure this button is a replacement, but for me this grip surely don't belongs to this dagger.

The runes button IMO is original,, but is not original to the grip. If you take alook of the amount of dirt and verdigris around the runes button and then compare it to the nice clean edges of the round hole in which the runes button sits in ,, you will see that there is no dirt in that area,,, plus also some bare wood shows through at the bottom of the runes button if you look close enough. In short the original runes button was lifted out along with the decades of dirt and replaced with another runes button...I agree also with Ricardo. The circle is perfetly cut. The grip does not seat well on the crossguard,,even the worse early SA example will still show a tight bottom of grip to crossguard fit. This example does not even come close. Regards Larry
