After the weekend, I was just wondering how many of our group have heard this (or something equivalent)- "I just wish you would show half as much interest in painting that wall as you do for those damn daggers!" Please feel free to elaborate- Mike

What I typically hear is "why don't you get rid of these things? If you die first, I'll be stuck with them"
Posted By: nickn2 Re: How many have heard this? - 04/01/2008 09:01 PM
why do you want so many they all look the same

Q) What do you want for Christmas?.

A) A dagger please!.

Q) What do you want for your birthday?.

Q) Do you love me?.

A) A dagger please!.

My kids think I'm crazy for spending sooo much time for looking and posting that NAZI stuff.

HA! This is great!
My wife is actually very supportive and likes my daggers, but every time I buy a Heer or an SA she always says;
"But you already have one like that."
Drives me crazy trying to explain;
"Yes, but this one is different! Don't you see???" Mad Big Grin
HA!

Erich - That could be a good thing, scare them right into line! I always wondered if a collector with a daughter ever showed the daughter's boyfriend the collection as a "scare" tactic. Eek

Try explaining daggers as if they were shoes or handbags, then she will understand

Your wife probably has 50 set of shoes or 20 handbags or 40 pots or 1,000 dishes that all look the same, but that seems to make sense to her Big Grin

My wife asked me to choose between her or my daggers.
I'm wondering what she's up to these days. Big Grin
Just kidding, she's still with me.................and my daggers. Wink

I just have to be very careful. My wife will SELL my daggers if she gets the chance! She already knows who the buyers are and it worries me.

Here's one that made my day. I'm out in the garage early last weekend working on my other past time, my car. My wife came down to discover me busy under the hood. Not real thrilled at all about this, she expressed her discontentment and also stated my youngest son,(4 yrs old), woke her up by telling her which dagger he likes (my display cabinet is wall mounted on my far bedroom wall). a future collector to be sure! The rest of my day was devoted to my "honey do" list, but in retrospect, it was a small price to pay for that joy.

That's great- try to engender your son's interest in the collection- My son grew up LITERALLY surrounded by daggers and swords and never took any interest in them at all- quite a mystery to me ! Mike

Eric and Tiger- simply explain to them that the daggers are permanent and are much more fun than going to a fancy restaurant("with you")- then duck-MJM

Mike,

As I said on the phone earlier, that's only because he does not realize their value Big Grin

10 years later:

"wow Dad can I see your Bulldog or HCH Krum" ?

The female equivalent to our collecting daggers has to be clothes.

On being invited out somewhere, as you stand staring in amazement at the bulging wardrobe jam packed full of clothes, shoes and handbags, comes the familiar cry..."but I haven't got anything to wear..."

With my wife I still have to use the 1/10th rule - and I STILL get heat about the cost.

"Ya hun this SA Dagger was only $120" {actual $1200}

Though she's getting good at quality - she was looking at a stone mint WKC Heer on the wall and said "that's got a really nice blade on it". Cool

My ex told me once:
"Me or these daggers" ... Guess if I will miss her someday. Cool

My son was all concerned about the amount of money I was spending on daggers. I told him that they were constantly increasing in value & that when I kicked off, he could make a small fortune off of them. He has been encouraging my purchases ever since. You just need to make it personal to them.

Yes, and one year later the dagger is worth $1,100 and the fancy dinner was flushed down the toilet 364 days ago.........

Polizist's 10% rule is good, maybe even a 5% rule in my case Smile

It works! Big Grin Perhaps though with a bit of wilful blindness on the part of the missus Wink

Geeeeez guys, thank God this thread was opened!!! I thought I was the only one in the world that had this problem Confused
Well, tonight I can go to bed knowing that there`s a couple of hundred others out there, with the same problem!!

Oh, and yes, my daggers ALWAYS only cost me $100; Big Grin
But then again, I`m divorced twice because of this hobby, and I got clever the first time around, when I was nearly forced to sell everything! Now, for all intents and purposes, my daggers are only worth a couple of hundred $`s Wink

Indeed, my wife is always on me to sell, sell, sell. When I try to sneak new purchases in, I've been caught on occasion. This worked on a single instance. 'What's in the box" ?!! Mad

Oh, I tried to sell this dagger, but the buyer didn't like it and sent it back. Oh, Okay Big Grin

My wife Helen compares my collection to a bank for her future holiday and spending spree needs.

No consideration for my footwork, poking and hoping at all those shows. She also calls them "Bloody horrible pointy things...." Although she is from Essex!! One would hope that after 30 years of marriage she would understand why I have to own more than one of each type. Even when I counter her logic with the handbag and shoe simile...."Thats different...." is her counter.

How can we ever hope to win against the logic of the female mind?
