Not sure if you have seen this yet, I was just picking the phone up to buy it and I read the whole discription and its just a bit too rough even at that price IMO.

No chain, broken tip, dented scabbard, poor leather, but its real! and I bet it sells quickly.

That dagger came out of Canada about 15 years ago.It sold at an auction for about $5600.00

Right as rain, and untouched since the war.It was found in Holland by a Canadian infantryman, and spent its whole postwar life in a drawer in the basement of a house in North Toronto!!

When I lived in L.I.N.Y.about 15yrs ago a collector comes into the club.He has a dagger and starts asking about it.It's a High Leader in a little better shape .Missing the chain and needing a re-leather on the scabbard.Blade was a little rough but all there. He's not a dagger guy so we start looking ,theres the original owners name on the back of the scabbard and he's listed in a book about HL .Now for the best part were did it come from. The collector is in an antique shop ,some guy comes in and trys selling the dagger to the owner. The shop owner is not interested as the leather is gone and the blade is all scratched Big Grin The collector asked to see it and asked 'How much" the owner wants ,are you ready $75.00 they settle at $65 neither knowing what they had.So you never know what walks into a shop.
P.S.it would have cost him about 3K at the time to recover the scabbard which he didn't do and $40 for the book which he bought ONLY after see the Leaders profile .True story

Are you sure?
"Although this dagger, which was located approximately 15 years ago at a street market in Moscow, is not in the condition usually offered by JRB&M, it is ORIGINAL and priced accordingly! For the collector who wants to own an example of one of the rarest Third Reich daggers, this is an opportunity not to be found often. RARE, untouched example! VG+ (25625) $21,500. CONSIGNMENT ITEM "

This did not come from a street market in Moscow. Razz

Has anything good ever come from a street market in Moscow? I think this has changed hands a few times since the original sale. It's just a selling story, or that is what the previous owner told him..

Untouched by who? While its hard to judge just when. The diagonal scratches and relatively fresh appearance of some of the rounded off blade tip - suggest that somebody has been hard at work much later than the original attempt at cleaning the blade. Whenever that was. FP

Nolan the 3K came from a top dealer with "original" Big Grin leather. This was long before the internet and knowing Manfred and GDC.I'll have to go to a L.I. show when I'm in N.Y.and see if the owner is still there and still has the dagger.

About 10 to 12 years ago, at the SoS a local guy walked in the door and went to the first table (Ron Manion's) - he pulled an SA High Leader's Dagger from his jacket and sold it to Manion when he was offered the astronomical sum of $3,000. As I remember, the dagger was in fair/good condition overall but the leather was missing on the scabbard.
Does anyone know where that dagger went; or where it is now?
Hmmm, Well I wouldn't want it, but as we are on the subject, what would a mint example of the same dagger be worth? And whilst we are at it, what would the SS version also be worth?

How much less a piece of junk?

That could be said for a lot of high end stuff, I mean the Himmlers,SS Full Rohms, and stuff like that. I keep hearing that "good" high end stuff still sells really well. I mean you will always be able to pick up a nice SA, but this high end damascus stuff is hard to find and buy even if you have the money.

I think once you covered all the bases and have a mint 33, 36, Chained NSKK, Himmler, SS Rohm, its kind of the next one to go for IMO.

The US currency is killing me at the moment and I refuse to pay a 30% premium because of the declining Canadian dollar.
I'm assuming it is the same story with the British pounds and other foreign currency.
When the Canadian dollar starts moving upward, I will get back in the market.

Mongo I think you are absolutely correct, if you are lucky enough to have the funds then the high end damascus stuff is the way to go...but condition should be an absolute priority.

My SA Honor was not cheap but it's condition is second to none and I could have sold it three times over for a price considerably above what I paid for it (only a few years ago).

Seiler, I am intrigued by these 3 bargain basement SA Honor daggers you can pick up between usd 30-35,000 as I may genuinely be interested - assuming they are in great condition - would you please send me the full details ?

Thanks
Jonathan

Posted By: mongobongo Re: $21,500 SA High leaders dagger! - 01/28/2009 09:44 PM
Here it is I only want like $100,000 for it! It has been in my family forever and a local dealer told me it was easily worth $250,000.

Now it is one of a kind and in case you are thinking it looks a bit like a repro, you are a fool! Its the REAL one that all the repros copied. Just look at the mint blade and detailing on it. When my grandad brought it back he also got a piece of Hitlers Toe nail that was in a presentation box.

So it seems a shame to split them up so I will let you have this fantastic dagger and Hitlers toe nail for $100,000.

The prices on art are falling as well as prices on coins. The daggers not exception. IMO it is better to wait before buying high end staff. When the dealers post "SOLD" and some crazy price next to it, it is not a fact that the price is factual. They exaggerate the prices to move them higher.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: $21,500 SA High leaders dagger! - 01/29/2009 04:39 AM

That is definitely the fact. Gone at some lesser price but gone nonetheless and the advertised price remains unchanged.

That is a lot better than the one I just sold on here for $100.000 but it does not come with Hitlers Toe Nail!.

Original parts that were put together post war, but its been done nicely. Some would say regardless of price they would never want one of these "parts daggers".

Others would say if they were buying this, providing they were fully aware what it was and the price was right then its not a problem. I guess its all down to opinion at the end of the day?

I too like the higher end items BUT condition is key as we all can agree upon. It is a very tiny market but things do sell, just not very fast. I would LOVE to own a nice high leaders dagger. Some day....

I know of a member here that sold a ex+ example. Many of these daggers are refurbished, leather or re-guilded the motto. IMO that really hurts the value.

Also if you have the cold cash in hand.....people will deal!
Posted By: E Rader Re: $21,500 SA High leaders dagger! - 02/02/2009 11:57 PM
FYI many dealers are "cash poor" so this is the time to work out deals.

Hi,
I'm a new member as of today but can't really say that I'm a collector. I've fallen into a lucky situation just as you have described. My grandmother passed away recently and she had in her basement in Maine this SA High Leader dagger and another plain bayonet. My father told me that his uncle had picked these up while he was in Germany during WWII. When he died, I guess they went to his sister (my grandmother). I can definitely say that they have never been in a collection! As part of my research I came to this site and saw the good comments.

I'm not even remotely skilled in assessing the condition but the dagger looks to be in fairly good shape. The gold of the "Alles for Deutschland" and the oak leaves is still very much intact. The big problem is with the scabbard which is completely missing the leather and has a rust spot on it. The chain is still intact.

Thanks to the link from Mongobongo, I'm astonished by what this dagger may be worth.
Anyway, I am looking to sell this dagger and asking for advice from this forum as to which dealers you have had good experiences selling to and which ones you have had bad experiences with. I've already sent e-mails off to a couple of dealers. Looking for help.

Wowww you are a lucky chap! its hard to give a good indication of price without some better pictures but the leather can be re covered. Whatever happens dont get tempted to clean it.

I expect you have already had a flurry of e-mails from people asking to buy it. Dont rush into anything its a very valuable piece if it all checks out. One of the rarest of all the third reich daggers.
Posted By: mongobongo Re: $21,500 SA High leaders dagger! - 02/16/2009 08:56 AM
These can sell for anything upto $50,000 yours has a lovely blade by the looks of it. It has never been cleaned so that really helps but it does need the leather re covering. If you sell it to a dealer they will also need to take a margin, even with the cost of the work and the margin this is still a great find if it checks out!...

I would try these dealers for prices, but you can also sell items on this forum if you upgrade so might end up getting better money for it that way.
