Hello jeeplover, to my best knowledge these hangers have been patented SA dagger hangers. With decades of time and shoe polish the brown color sometimes turned to a brownblack color. It is also possible that some of these have been worn, during the period, as SSdagger hangers, therefore perhaps privately colored black.
Btw your hanger misses an important loop (see mine).
These hangers now are often faked and offered even by the "big ones"... Your hanger seems to be a nice original which are scarce at least.
Here is a pic of mine and one variation how it was worn .
Regards,

These are very interesting and rare hangers. Also quite fragile. The two shown above are missing pieces. Sorry, gents.

Wotan is correct that they were patented but not necessarily for SA in my opinion. I have 4 and two are black leather.

First, there are two types: ones that swivel so the dagger can hang at 45 degrees and ones where the dagger does not swivel. Both are illustrated below.

The one in the middle is the non-swiveling type on an early SS dagger. The strap goes around the to of the scabbard as can be seen. In this case, the owner has the large ring cut and removed so the hanger could be buckled around the scabbard and over the small suspension ring. the larger ring was then re-installed.

The two mounted on the SA daggers are ones that swivel.

When complete, the swiveling type look like this:

Note the small half oval ring built into the top.

To use in the swiveled position:

1. Undo the snap on the retaining strap
2. Swivel the dagger 45 degrees
3. thread the strap though BOTH the little half oval loop and the larger carrying ring
4. Close the snap.

The swiveling type were also made in black and stamped D.R.G.M. (Sorry for the poor picture)

Notice that the brown hanger in the middle is not stamped on the front.

However the rear was painted white and rubber stamp D.R.G.M. in purple ink.

The weakest part of the hanger was the small flap of leather that held the clip and retained the small half oval ring. Many daggers show sign of repairs. Here is one on a photo I found many years ago.

By the way, on the picture two posts above showing the reverse of the two brown hangers, I noted one was painted white with DRGM stamped in purple ink.

I am told that was done on samples submitted to DRGM for approval. Anyone else aware of this ?

I was going to buy this from my friend but I feel the price was to hi. he said he would sell me the hanger separate but he wanted $400. I was told that was a good price on another forum a gentlemen told me the hanger alone in the condition it was in is worth $600.i do not know if these prices are accurate or not my mane thing I collect is Japanese stuff. the cost of the hanger is half way to a decent sword. I wanted to post the pictures so people could have a chance to see things that are not common.
thank you very much vern for posting the pictures for me

Jeep,

Not worth $400 in my opinion. It's missing a part and the leather has dry rot.

My advice: Get spellcheck and stick to Japanese relics.

Any other questions about these or any other hangers ?

Larry C., a valued member here and a knowledgeable SA collector, has one of these hangers put together in unique way. Perhaps he will show it to us.

Hi Dave ..here are just a couple of pics for now and will upload a few more tomorrow .

I have some reverse side photos on another drive ..but this one is truly SS and was examined by Dave H himself.

This hanger can also be seen in vertical and side carry in Tom Wittmanns SS reference / accoutrement section

The gentleman that jeeplover refers to is myself ..and yes..my hanger would be worth IMO about $600 since it is complete including the swivel retainer loop
as seen on this thread on the WRF >
http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/ss-dienstdolch-1933-1936/unsusal-dagger-hanger-695193/

I apologize for any misunderstanding that I may have said on that thread.

Regards Larry

Dave,

We all appreciate you posting pictures of your wonderful hangers but making fun of a member for a spelling mistake is mean spirited and unnecessary. Your behavior in this and other threads has contributed to the mass exodus from this forum.

Pathetic behavior from anyone especially a moderator. You owe Jeep an apology.

A few more hanger pics
Sorry for the blurry pics.......old file photos

a little history of this patented hanger
This was not a homemade hanger as this actually had a patent number..(PA-Nr: 1333897-1934) and was created by a Leather maker by the name of Fritz Rasp. This hanger could be worn in the vertical carry position as it also had a rivet on the back of the sleeve to turn it on an angle and carried at a 45degree angle.

Thanks, Larry

That is really interesting and an improvement on the ones I showed.

1. The leather that is folded over is not a thin add-on piece like mine. It is part of the main leather piece and is folded over. Much stronger.

2. The clip is a regular type used in other hangers. The bottom of the clip is thicker metal with less tendency to cut into the strap.
