guys I have been offered a first pattern chained SS dagger everything checks out fit and detail wise but the lower cross guard is stamped He. Is this encountered? I remember reading that this does appear on chained examples. Thanks guys cheers, Ryan

It would be as acceptable as SSems placed into chained scabbards ...but that would be the fine line difference between what a purist seeks and what is acceptable and allowable.

Hard to say Ryan as the SA guards have been encountered on chained examples.

Speaking just for myself..I like the original initial production examples as they first came out which all were unmarked.
Thats just me..,,but your question will make for a great thread.

I have one, vet acquired by the truck driver I bought it from. They are in Tom Wittmann's book, and I showed him my dagger at one of the SOS shows, said it was totally legit.

I had one from 40 years ago with a B.

It was before they were accepted as being legit.

Like a dope I had the B polished off. 40 years later you can't tell it was ever there.

There was a time when some of the so-called "experts" would tell you that the government purchased personalized Luftwaffe daggers were OK - because it (the Luftwaffe) was in the business of selling the government acceptance marked examples to its personnel. Likewise the recycled parts types like the ex-SA parts equipped 3rd manufacturing variation of the chained SS daggers, that for most examples now have had the markings scrubbed off. Many of which having what looks like postwar fooled around with badly fitted damaged grips, and poor fitting dagger to scabbards workmanship etc. With those who are more inclined to be purists opting for the iron or zinc cross guard equipped daggers that have plating that's identical to the chain-sets.
