Hello,

I am new to collecting SS daggers. In fact I have only purchased one and did so just recently from a website. All I will say for now is the owner is a guy named Greg.

After receiving the dagger I had questions regarding how authentic the piece is and would appreciate some shared knowledge.

I have attached five pictures that I hope will be enough for feedback.

Regards,
David

In my opinion this is a fake. The makers mark looks laser etched, not acid etched as I should be. The blade and makers mark look brand new, but there is no proper crossgaining. The cross guard seems to me stamped with a letter. If it is an SS dagger then the cross guard should be stamped with a numeral, if it is early vintage which this one is pretending to be.

For the sake of education, could you please post photos of the SS rune button, and a few more of the scabbard and hilt.

Others on this forum who have far greater knowledge than I will hopefully make some comments soon, but get prepared to take this thing back and get your money back. How much did the seller ask for it?

David- I also am new to collecting but I can say for sure these guys know their stuff- the first lesson in tr is the hardest it's overrun with fakes- I know there's a few great reference books for sale right now on our estand this investment will pay itself back 10 fold. Don't hesitate to ask these guys anything and get yourself a nice xmas present of a couple good dagger books - many of the authors are forum members themselves! Best move so
Far was joining the forum speaking for mysel, hope it turns out to be yours too... Welcome to
The forum David and merry Christmas to you!
God bless
Mike

My thoughts are negative.

- The lower guard has an SA mark, not an SS mark.

- The blade trademark is not correct when compared to origials.

Need more pictures - in focus - to say more.

Get a scabbard with it?

Best advice for you is to buy your 1st dagger from a reputable source. If you post it here before pulling the trigger these guys will help you.
Too many times a newbie gets ripped off and leaves the hobby for good.
Take heart though there are many good guys and it's a great hobby!

Yeah this dagger is a no go brother. Like Dave said, the lower crossguard has a Gruppe mark on it which is for SA daggers.
The maker mark and motto on the blade don't seem to be acid etched.

Are you able to return it?

When you want to get involved with SS daggers you should direct yourself to a reputable source/dealer.

Guess

Hello again and thank you all for your comments.

Regarding www.germanreichmilitarytreasures.com where I purchased this dagger from, prior to which I had talked with the owner Greg who then assured me of his honesty and how high he holds his reputation in what he sells.

So I will see when I contact him to return the dagger. His phone number he lists on the website is never answered and has no voicemail available. I have had some luck with email. I did use PayPal which maybe my saving grace.

This dagger was listed as having real German Nazi SS parts but when I received it, some things on it did not look right.(For the gentlemen that requested some other pictures I will add them later when I get home).

Great Regards,
David

I've just had a look at his web site, wish i hadn't bothered

I think you've heard it all now. The 'M' on the crossguard is an immediate give away that it's not SS, but an SA dagger part. The blade looks completely fake to me, with modern laser etching and strange surface polishing... not a trace of any cross graining.
It would be really nice to see more of the grip, especially the runes button. The eagle looks to me as though it has been crudely pinned or glued into place, and the wood has that slightly porous look to it that should be a red flag. As I said, it would be good to see more. Also of the scabbard.
Thanks for sharing the info on who sold it. How much was the sale price? One of the best ways to spot a fake when you start collecting is when dealers offer a dagger for sale at a massively discounted price.
You said something about him claiming this has original parts... well that means that the dagger isn't original, it might contain one original part and the rest could be a few months old.
This nonsense happens to most of us when we start collecting, and it's a valuable lesson. Please don't give up the hobby...

Sir Gregory James?
Posted By: Panzerfaust Re: SS Dagger......is it genuine - 01/02/2016 12:34 AM
Well I just visited his site and immediately it was my last visit!

The dagger has serious problems, as noted. These fake Reinh blades are beginning to surface quite a bit, several on Gunbroker.com. Whoever is making or altering them likely knows that is a somewhat scarce maker, which adds to their desirability (if they were real). Any dagger with this maker should be carefully scrutinized.

I to remember the name Gregory James from yeas ago. Stay as far away from this dealer as possible. The web site is reason enough to stay away, just take a look at the returns conditions.

That's not "Sir Gregory James" (Greg Zurawski). He was in New Llano Louisiana and is now in Florida. Tampa, I think. www.beehallputsch.com

So, does anyone know who "Gregg" is ?

I think NJ from the phone number.

I remember the guy on that picture, his name was indeed Greg and was the person responsible for discovering the Goring industrial sword ( the one pictured ). He had as an associate, another trustworthy fruit cake, Bruce Petrin, also known as Mister Gold. Greg with the sword actually lives in Tampa, Florida but don't know if he is the guy owning that web site. The Goring sword was then bought by Tom Wittmann which I think, he still owns.

Yeah, he does the shows and has contacts in the hobby and operates out of South Jersey around Princeton. Won't be the first return but would recommend the buyer be courteous and he should be fine. Site has been around for years and can be spotty.
