Hi there - i have been keeping an eye on what i suspect is a fake SS and i requested a couple of pics on the crossguards. I would appreciate your thoughts on the stamping of the SS number as well as who manufactured the crossguards. I have tried Witty's book and Fisher and i haven't seen this one before????

This topic could be interesting.

First:

1. The internal markings do not scare me. There are what appears to be many 'unknown' or strange markings that are real. Most cast in place and the occasional stamped letter.

2. The shape and appearance look OK.

3. The SS number is stamped with numbers that look OK. You can find numbers of all sizes on these daggers.

But ...

The number, 6166, is traceable to SS Haupsturmfuhrer Erich Raadke in the 1934 list and probably others.

And, the grooves seem a little shallow in one of the pictures, but that may be the angle.

The rest of the dagger would say a lot.

Email me a link to the dagger and I'll give you my thoughts but will keep the location under my hat and I won't jump your claim.

The guards looks like plated, from the provided pics.

I thought so at first, but plated crossguards cannot be stamped with a number or the "I" and look like they do.

Hi again - I have finally managed to track down the dagger and it appears to have changed again. When I first saw it it had no grip eagle or SS button. hard to tell from the pic's but the button looks dodgy to me...

Not much can be decided from these photos except it is in poor shape. What is correct or fake - - who knows?
