I have not yet seen this dagger but will be going to look at it next week. The seller told me that there is a number that goes around the tang nut. The number is 1232.

My first question is, is this a SS officer's SS number that can be identified?

My second question is, has anyone ever seen a ss number engraved on a on a tang nut?

Numbers on 36 pattern daggers are not often seen but they appear from time to time.
It might be a 33 dagger in a 36 scabbard. Pictures would be helpful to determine that.

The number 1232 goes to a Werner Thoms,
Born 07.05.1899
NSDAP number 91514
SS-Haptsturmfuhrer 20.04.1939

Thanks much for the information Zozza. The seller tells me that along with the number 1232 there are also the initials "WT" in script type lettering on the tang nut as well. He says the engraving appears period. Have you ever heard of the SS number (and initials) engraved on the tang nut?

I haven't seen the dagger as of yet. I will go look at it next week and post photos before I buy it.
