I recently started a thread with 20 close-ups of SS runes and challenged everyone to ID the maker of the dagger. 10 of the 20 were successfully identified. Some members said that they might do better at eagles.
Soooooooo, following are 22 eagle. 21 are from maker-marked early SS daggers - No RZM 120/121 etc, and 1 eagle is from a "transitional" or double proofed SS dagger. Some daggers are the same as in the runes thread, others are not. Several makers are shown more than once.

Here you are 22 different eagles !
Dave
Highly interesting and informative. Most believe there are only 3 or 4 styles. I'm not much of a "helmet guy," but I suspect more than a few helmet decals have been branded as fakes when they are variants.
Ok Let me belly up to the bar and give it a shot...

Larry and Gerd,
Sorry, no hits. Try another tavern
As grumpy said, many collectors think there are 3-4 types. The above pictures prove otherwise. Actually, it is easier to spot in pictures as they are many times larger.

No more guesses ? There are not that many early SS daggers and if you tabulate the above misses, you have to hit sooner or later.
I am surprised, as with the runes thread, that so few of the advanced collectors/dealers have not ventured an opinion.

Thanks, gents.
I'll now fill in the rest.
The ones with their name in red were identified by Members. The ones in Blue I filled in. Many thanks to all who participated.
What I will do in a day or two is remove all the posts that were made trying to ID the eagles. You are welcome to add your own SS eagles after I have done that.
As with the thread about SS rune buttons, I hope this convinces you that:
1. There are more variations of eagles than is usually thought. Close up photography really helps point this out.
2. That you should never reject an SS dagger because of the eagle details.
Regards,
Dave
20-klaas-should be in red, same as 21-bert and 22-f.herder, me and kreta nailed them!

You're right,Andrew.

I am curious. Does anyone know of the manufacturer(s) of the grip eagles of these SS daggers? Does anyone have an original apart from the grip, and is it marked/RZM'd ? I search my Assmann catalog copy and could find no example of this peculiar eagle. It is not a party eagle per se. Thank for any info. I posted this on WAF but the response was limited. Collectors indicated only two manufacturers: Assmann M1/17 and C.T. Dicke M1/47. Any photos of catalogs or the eagles themselves? Thanks.
Joe,
Good question. Most are still in the grip so impossible to tell. I'll search my images to see if I have a 'dismounted' one, but I don't remember one.
Dave
Dave, thank you very much for sharing these images. What firm was M1/6? Does anyone know?
The galleries on the right are pretty extensive, Joe. Try there.

Dave I have a friend that is looking for and Eagle for a SA dagger , He is looking for a gold color or bronze color, I am thnking they only made Silver, His is missing I'm wondering why he has to have a gold one
Thanks Bob
Here you are 22 different eagles !
Dave
Red.
They were made of nickle silver or alpaca ... which contained no silver.
But, if "your bud" needs an eagle then beware as the substitution will be obvious
