I acquired this unique item "Garrotte" 40 yrs. ago from a WWII Veteran. It could be British
Marines SOE, 1st,2nd Marine Raiders Battalions, Carlson's Raiders, Japanese , German. Can anybody ID this Commando Garrotte? Thank you. Max

I agree w G about the damage that would do - it's no traditional piece- coils are odd... Most are thin taut and sturdy for obvious reasons- can't see why u would want any give or slack on the line of a garrote- u would have to be very strong to pull past the stretch. I don't think Japanese tho - although it seems to be a first guess- theirs were single cord or wire and basic. Interlocking coils seems odd too- not sure why u would want all those possible places where line could weaken. Yeah maybe an oss or other torture device- maybe not meant to kill? Just my guesses interesting piece thanks for sharing it

First, the (coils/chain)do not stretch and won't weaken. It will snap a twig or neck in a NY second. I could easily imagine it being gestapo or even from a Concentration camp. Max

Could be! All i see is that pic so as I said just an educated guess by me max based on what I know and the looks of it. I like studying tools of the trade and prison items. Maybe there's a pic of it out there somewhere? Only trying to be helpful... Did it come from a KZ camp?

OMG, here are some at least ...interesting... phantasies. For me it is a (simpler) variant of the "Knebelkette" also called "Zwiesel", used mainly by police to move someone forward, eg. to the court or a lawer.
The tool is looped around the deliquent´s wrist and by slight turning the handle(s) it closes tight around the wrist. Against any -interesting- thoughts this tool was not intended for torture but for securing a (supposed) criminal and violent offender to prevent flight or an actual act of violence against the court or the lawer.

If you think they're used on a persons wrist, ordinary hand cuffs would suffice. They are called garrottes. Max
