There is rust on the tang nut and a small amount of rust around the edges/rim of the corrosion spots on the back of the scabbard. The rust here is minimal but as you can see from the photos it is heavy on the tang nut. The dagger has not been cleaned before.

Is there a good way to clean the rust? Product to use...method..etc? Or is it best left alone?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Look on eBay and elsewhere for a tang nut.

Thanks much Dave. Should I look for one that this maker would have used? Or does it matter? Will it lessen the collector value of the dagger?

You can try fine steel wool or bronze wool on the nut with a small amount of solvent, such as WD-40. But, it looks like a nickel-silver nut would be more appropriate with this dagger. As to the scabbard, you can lightly coat it with petroleum jelly and let it set few days. Much of the rust will come off when you wipe it clean. Repeated applications might be necessary. What rust patina remains will tend to blend into the paint without leaving shiny metal.
