I am not a expert, but if it is marked Germany, it is most likely post war.

Hello, Agzo. Welcome to GDC.

Gaucho knives are a very interesting subject. Many variations over 100+ years. We do not see too many here.

Can you show the entire knife ?

Thanks, Dave

Listed as a post war mark for Gebr. Noelle GmbH.

Hi! Thank you Vern, where did you find that info?

I have several books covering German makers from the 1700s until around 1980 wink

I have no idea which war you are meaning, Ed. Possibly WW II ?
Anyway I doubt that the country of origin's marking 'GERMANY' is a realistic option to date a knife.

Arrows are showing up in German trade mark directories in many different positions and combinations, such as the following couply by Gebr. Noelle:

Both of these are different to the illustration of this thread.
I would be pleased to complete my files with the additional Noelle Broths.' trademark that you are referring to, Vern, and possible registration number and date.

The location's marking 'SOLINGEN' below the illustrated trademark does convince me, that Gebr. Noelle was not the manufacturer of this post's knife. This cutler of table ware was located in Luedenscheid, c. 100 miles away from Solingen.

I regret that in my files I could not yet track a German cutler's matching trademark showing a circle with two arrows so far.

Generally, when we see a knife with a mark "Germany", it is a sign the knife was produced after World War Two.
That is commonly seen on HJ knives and Bayonets.
I was not referring to the arrow, rather the marked word Germany.
I am sure that is NOT written in stone, but is mostly the case.

The only reference I have with the double arrow through circle mark is a Xerox copy of the Solingen Blade Makers Directory dated 1950.

Pages 61-62, "German Knife and Sword Makers, 1850-1945", (J. Anthony Carter), notes:

Marks such as MADE IN GERMANY often show the item was sold during the the last quarter of the 19th century. The Merchandise Marks Act, passed in Britain in 1887.

In January 1891 the USA also required the country of origin on imported goods and on November 23, 1921, amended the rule to include MADE IN in addition to the country of origin. These requirements are still enforced.

As a collector of antique to vintage clay tobacco pipes I have been aware of these marks on clay tobacco pipes. Pipes made before these laws will only have the makers town or city marks and not the country of origin.

Thanks to everyone who has taken time to answer this topic. We can say that this piece is manufactured between 1891 and 1921?

It would be easier to date this knife if we could see the entire knife.

Hello Vern,

Can you please let me know the exact title (or cover) of that 1950 "Solingen Blade Makers Directory"?
I have access to several sources where I might cross-check (or scan) such a reference book.
