It is fairly old. Very stiff, thick leather with a crescent of iron built into the bottom.

Hand cut brass pieces riveted on.

Cord is 15.5 inches long

Here it is propped open with a toothpick.

There is a very small pouch inside

This is the back. Very crude manufacture. The right vertical strip of brass is gone

I'd say Tibetan. Perhaps a type of purse

Very close, Jared !

It is Tibetan. The best clue of its purpose is the iron bit at the bottom.

Iron bit? Maybe for holding flints- a primitive fire starting kit ?

Right, Mike.

Fire starting kit.

This thing has a special name ... anybody find it on Google ?

Waybeforezippo ? Chuckmuck EBAY VS Google smile
Posted By: Dave Re: Who can ID this .. without Google ? - 06/05/2020 03:28 PM
Eric is right ... "Chuckmuck" is the name for it.

I've had it for about 60 years. With the iron crescent and a pouch for a flint, I always thought it to be some kind of fire starting device. Crudely made, with a strap you could fasten to a button as you rode your horse ( or camel as Militarynut opines ) it looked old. A couple of weeks ago I started looking around the I-net, and, after searching for a flint purse, this came up.

So there you are. In 2020 I own a chucmuck.

Thanks to all who had a go at this one

Dave

Dave,

Interesting piece and very important to have way back - no fire no dinner etc.

Thanks for posting
