Dave, your post has confused me. You say there are "5 foot soldiers. Do you meen that there are five examples of foot soldiers(infantry), or do you mean they actually turned out toys that are 5 feet tall.

Five models of foot soldiers. Each nominally 2" high. A majority of the lead soldiers / figures made in England 1950 - 1960, which is when these are from, are of that scale.

In the 1950-1960 time frame, there were many makers of toy lead figures in England. The 10 I just showed you came from Britains, the most prolific maker of lead toys. Everything from farm scenes to circuses to soldiers to knights. Their knights are superior in detail and paint.

Another prolific manufacturer was Timpo. They made a set of knights called Knights of the Round Table, based of a poor movie of the same name.

There were eight mounted knights plus King Arthur.

In addition, three men on foot were sold. King Arthur, Lancelot, and Mordred. Same scale of about 2" for the men. These three are difficult to find with their swords intact.

They also sold mounted Crusaders that used the same horses.

Wish I had kept my set that I had as a kid. We really played with them back then didn't we. Would leave them in the rain, mud and dirt and would take turns blowing them up with dirt clods. It's all about computer games now.

Here are some of my pieces.

A set of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders with box. Taken alongside a dirk of the same unit.

I was surprised to learn some of these have moving parts.

I am also aware they are reproducing these (not made of dead), but they are also reproducing the box.

These I have are original.

These we think are French but would like some opinions. Specifically we think they are French Foreign Legion.

I think these are US troops.

Those are nice! The machine gun reminds me of the French St. Etienne machine gun? Which was used by the French in WWI

I bought the special edition which is over $500 now. It included 4 unique figures.

The basic reason is that all the ones I have shown you were bought by me aged 10-12 when we lived in England 1953-55. I have replaced a few broken figures in various sets, but otherwise they are childhood memories

I have a 3 shelf piece with items from my Dad, myself and my son. It is so crammed with stuff I can't even take anything out!

Here is an interesting lead knight by Cherilea. Vintage mid 1950's

This is from their Baronial Series which is very hard to find. It is not really a series, just the same model painted in many heraldic versions

The interesting part is that is that there are five separate parts.

All of the items I have shown, including the Baronial, are referred to these days as "54mm" size. That is the nominal height of a standing man. This is the size used by most British makers.

This lead machine gunner is made by Britains, but don't know exact date of manufacture.

Another one made by Britains, again not sure of exact date when it was made. Dam it, I broke the sword off while taking the picture.

Rubber Tank. Made in the USA by the Auburn Rubber Company, Auburn Indiana.

I didn't think I had any Knights! Made by Britains.

I think the Germans are Soldat...They are lead and 2.5 inches tall...
The kettle drummer is a Britain...
The Brits are plastic and maker unknown.....got them years ago at a yard sale. They are 1 3/4" size....

That's the mark of the Heinrich Winterling porcelain factory in Marktleuthen, 1935- 1945. From orders of the German Luftwaffe. Very nice and thanks for showing it.

I dug out my reference books.

- The 4 GIs are made by an English company named Crescent after WWII. the guy kneeling is a radio operator. Maybe some repaints.

- The machine gunner is from set 194 by Britains. Made in 1916.

- The horseman is also Britains. He is the officer from set 2056 "Union Cavalry"

the guys with the blue helmets are Britains set 2155, UN Infantry, from 1957

Now for my last but best presentation: The Robin Hood set made by Benbros in England in the early 1950's.

It was modeled directly on the movie "Robin Hood" - the version with Errol Flynn.

Here are the trees and the guards.

The boxed set only had 4 guards, but I have 8. 6 shown above. Tough to find unbroken as they are cast in one piece of soft lead and the ends of the pike break off.

Here is the full set. From L to R: Guards, Sheriff, Bishop of Hereford, Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, Little John, Will Scarlet, Mutch the Millers Son, and Robin.

In previous pages, someone posted a knight with a silver painted horse and red lance. That was one of a set from 1933 by Britains.

Collecting those was fun. I bought all of them at Gamleys, in Church Road, in Hove, Sussex. I can remember the endless ranks of lead figures in their windows and the indecision of where to spend my pocket money. A new Knight on horseback or three more soldiers?

A note on the dating of the sets mentioned above. The dates I have quoted were the year of introduction of the set. Some lasted many years as is, some went through color changes, and other were short lived. Often, a figure or two was recycled to another new set. WWI and WWII made for the biggest changes in military models. They were mostly gone by 1960 because of the lead content. They later reappeared but as collector pieces rather than toys. Many were replaced by similar plastic toys.

I still have some Britains Models 'swoppets' from the 1960's,knights,ACW and the overland stage coach which as you can see in the 1967 catalogue cost twentyseven shillings an eleven pence(well over a months pocket money)

Don't have the stagecoach but wish I did have a Jacob's cracker box full of knights and cowboys and indians though fond memories

the patrol cast iron piece is repro. i can tell by the poor casting on it.

I actually got it years ago without tires! , A friend gave me those..Just a display piece on a bookshelf.. The original is a hard to find one by me..

no gaspare your mc is real made by hubley original it had black tires. I think those white tires look like they came off a rubber toy something like a mickey mouse sun rubber toy. Fat guy lou bell patrol truck is a repro poor casting and no rubber for the tires. Yes at one time wheels were also cast iron but mostly they were chromed. His patrol car i would say is around 5 to 10 yearsof age. Those rubber motorcycles are neat when you can get all the color combinations. They were made by auburn rubber. Plus they came in different sizes.

Here are a few of my toys the first being a Ken Kearsley of England piece a civil war soldier on horseback, Next is a German Panzer Speewagon made by Lineol third reich period with original key the cannon swivels and the panzer soldier is removeable,then comes the DAK panzer abwehr-kanone made by Lineol third reich period then we have the food kitchen on wheels (mmm Goulash soup)Kanonen rohr-kuche made by Lineol third reich period
Then we have the panzer officer made by Elastolin, Colonial soldier same maker and German soldier same maker
I have had these in my collection for over thirty years Hope members enjoy viewing these treasures

good morning sorry these third reich toys wont make the max this year . my tables will be full as i bought a large japanese sword collection and i will be bringing my few german ww1 camoed helmets plus outher third reich treasures sorry i am still fondling my toys. forgot to mention that the panzer speewagon is wind up or batteries operated dont know what size german batteries fits its a large hole . also if you look close one side light is lost to time outher wise 98 percent original paint thanks god bless all andy militarynut

Nice 1960's era plastic trucks, and 2 trains.To give you idea on scale, the Fire Engine in back is 12". The trains are 40"
The 2 small dump truckas still have the original store,brand tags .39 cents for the larger, .19 for the little small.
