Spotted for sale is this WSS Officers visor. I really like the hat itself but I'm not too sure about the insignia, especially the Assmann TK.
Your opinions please gentlemen!

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to hats, but is the smooth visor underside correct? Seems I have read it should have a "waffled" or textured design.

Hiya Phil, I've spent a fortune lately but I'm of the opinion that if they're authentic, mortage the house, sell the girlfriend, do whatever it takes because the good ones are rare and will be the best investment you ever make.
It is strange though how they come along all at the same time. I've been looking for WSS visors for about 4 years now and only bought one because I was never convinced of the others but in the last couple of months I've seen 4 with a lot of potential.

At the risk of being a kill-joy, I would be less inclined to buy this cap. It could also be an old fake. I also do not like the Totenkopf, in fact. It is true, though, that caps all tumble out of the sky at the same time. On this cap, I dislike the color of the cap cover, its farbic, as well as the underside of the Muetzenschirm. However, I am not there and I have not looked at the thing, to be sure.

Also of issue here is the width of the cap band, i.e. the velvet piece. It should be wider, as well. This more narrow feature is also symptomatic of 1960s fakes, as well. Finally, the absence of the rhombus also points to the willful extraction of the plastic thingy that might also have been in this cap. I owned caps like this in the mid-1960s, when I was very young and oh-so-naive.

Ryan S asked me about this visor (from Regimentals) back in March and the same conclusions were reached as what has been reached here - especially the skull and the smooth underside of the peak being no good. I would not buy it.

Regards,

Tony

There is a Japanese firm that specializes in visor caps that uses a smooth visor that is pretty much identical to this variety...its been out and available for some time now. Check under Schmidt and Sohn out of Japan.

Aber nein! This is an old fake, I think. The free radicals and lack of antioxidants work their ravages all the same...forty years begins to look like sixty....
