Hi

On the early wedge caps of the Waffen SS, The front skull buttons are they rzm marked or can they be unmark as well? I know some were painted as well, correct?

Thanks Joe Semen

Yes, some were unmarked and the later ones were painted. Infact, most of the painted ones found today are unmarked.

They came in a 'natural finish', painted, both grey and green, and can be found with a variety of markings..they are also highly reproduced, so tread carefully! Razz

Hi,

I have another question. On the inside of the skulls eyes is the finish like the outside of the button pebble finish or is it smooth finish inside the skull sockets? And the size of the button exact 21mm in size or slight variation as well? For example like 20.64mm or 20.54mm . These measurements I just made up.

Thanks Joe Semen

Some sockets were pebbled, others were not. Likewise, some had two distinct rows of teeth, while others appear to have only one. It depended on maker and you really need to learn the characteristics of each to stay out of trouble.

As for measurements, I have never measured any. I generally consider using things like measurements and weights a poor way to judge originality anyway. You will weed out some fakes using measurements, but could be fooled by better ones. You will be better served by learning to judge them by the distinct features.

About the only simple discriminator is that all originals were a three-piece construction.
