I posted this query on other sites here but did not get an answer.

Does "bubbling" on an EK's paint indicate underlying rust or is it just plain old aging of the paint?

If it is rust I believe a shot of WD 40 is in order. Is this true?

I would suspect rust. Unless the bubble is open, I don't think the oil could get to the metal surface. Can you post a photo?

The only other option is to use a needlr to open the bubbles and then oil. It may need a bit of touchup afterwards.

I am thinking of trying Breakfree CLP rather than WD40. What do you think???

Rod,

I would very cautious about using any penetrating oils such as WD 40 or Breakfree. Once the oil gets between the paint and the base metal of the core you may find that the paint comes off as the bond is irretrievably broken.

In the gunsmithing trade WD40 has been known to get under nickle plating and cause it to flake off. Paint has even less adhesion than plating.

If you do go the oil route then the oil will ahve to be removed again to do any touch up. Paint nor bluing solutions don't adhere worth beans to an oily surface.

Sometimes leaving well enough alone is the best course.

Anything would have trouble getting to the surface through the paint. And Tony has a good point. You could end up losing a fair amount of paint if the rust runs further under the surface.

I chose to loose rust. Also lost a very small amount of paint in the process, most of which was ready to "expire" anyway. I think in the long run it was worth it. I added some Ren wax and I am pleased with the result.
