The hobby is leaning and quickly growing into a science.
Obtain the tools and study the books and educate yourself. And most of all, contribute and participate on our GDC Forum and net work with known educated and informed collectors.
* Micrometer.
* Digital Scales.
* Microscope.
* Black Light.
And when need be and if warrented, consult with a metalurgist or a labratory specializing in materials and fabrics.
Oh yea, and for some, a clear nose and a clean palate if one is of that vintage and belief.
But most of all, enjoy and have fun with your hobby.
Of course, if one's not content with the hobby, there is always an alternative.
