I bought a real sweet WWI M1898 Neuer Art Mauser bayonet By Allex Coppel, Solingen. Crown with W O2 on top of blade, double inspectors marks,The sheath has 86.R.10.183. on it. And the Hilt has 170.R.10.121. Can anyone please tell me what these Mean?
Thank You

They're regimental markings, representing units in the Imperial German Army; this actual bayonet I have images of (probably off ePay?) dated November 2005.
You're bayonet is a line Regiment, you're bard a reserve regiment, the 170th IR was part of the XIV Korps in Karlsruhe during the time this bayonet was issued, Carter speculated the 170th IR may not have been issued their bayonets as they are acceptanced and he maybe right as I have only your one example so early (Carter offers up two others this early, a WKC & another Alex Coppel) most others from this Korps are dated later, as is a few from this IR, anyway, do a few pics, the images I have do not show the acceptance but as you have suggested this is how I have it marked so the auction or where ever i got the pics from must have suggested the same as you do?
At the start of the war this IR was with the 29th ID and fought in France, it was a very busy and fine Division during this period, later the 170th IR was transfered..

I might also say in my database i found only a couple three of this IR on file, Carter has 3 listed, Jeff Noll I saw none, - not a very heavily "reported" bayonet unit marking!

Thank you so very much for all your help. I bought this at a gun auction here in LasVegas NV Saturday. It was part of an estate of more then three thousand guns and bayonets collected over many years. Thay sold five hundred this time with fore more auctions in the future. I bought this one only because I have never seen another marked this way.Sounds like I got lucky.Payed $110.00 Thanks again.
