Hello gentlemen, this helmet appears on our local auction, and seller states he is not sure about originality.... Any comments please?
Thanks,
Jan

You know, I have fifteen years of dagger experience but never had an interest in helmets until now... I also get around all German firearms pretty good too. When a person asks for comments on a particular helmet, can't you "pros", at least, elaborate a little more? That helmet looks pretty good to me. Of course, I haven't developed "The Eye" yet. Little one liners do no good... I'm not talking about you Erik... (what is a Czech repro). I know, a reproduction helmet produced in the Czech Republic..

Hallo Gunther,

you need to know an original to learn from and not why a fake one is bad.

the liner is fake, the chinstrap is fake
the paint is fake, the decal is fake
the helmet shell is real, and there is a possibility the linerring is real, but cant see that here, but 99.9% chance it is fake too

signs you know it is a fake, :
wrong stiching, wrong construction, wrong kind of oxidation/rust,
wrong leather, wrong markings.

but a ND helmet and study and learn

"Elaborating" on a helmet is more complicated than you may believe. Also, every collector looks at different things, and typically advanced collectors do not like to share all their knowledge and expertise in an open forum for obvious reasons. In addition, the same questions are asked over and over and over again and I think many get tired of repeating themselves.

If you want to get the "basics" of SS helmets, I strongly recommend "SS Steel" by Kelly Hicks. After reading this, you will not only have a better understanding of original SS helmets, but also why it is impossible for members to elaborate more in these posts. While SS decals appear quite simple, the whole area of SS helmets is probably the most complicated of all German helmet collecting.

When I refer to Czech repros, it was with a little bit of sarcasm as we now see Czech collectors facing the same problems of forgeries that U.S. collectors faced 5-7 years ago with the huge influx of Czech made reproductions that hit the market at that time.

Erik
