Elementery my dear Simon, The first dagger is an army dagger being sold here in the US for its actual value. The second daggger is an Air Force dagger being sold out of the Czech Republic. As everyone in the Czech Republic knows, Americans will buy anything with a good story. What is really interesting is that the army daggers are the difficult ones to find.

Guys, you all got too exited here about the dagger for a good price. BUT, the major problem with this one is that Soviet Army Daggers were issued only starting from 1955.

Lwov - Are you sure? I always thought the Army like the AirForce daggers both were introduced for all officers in 1949, and abolished from the regulations for use in 1958.
Best regards,

Definitely not 1949. Army Daggers were issued only for a couple of years. I believe the first year was 1955, I will double check when I get home. Buy the way both Army and Air Force were continued to be issued for the limited purpose; for the officers participating in military parades.

Wow, o.k.,, I thought that M40 was a all round/generic dagger for all Generals. Pretty sure I saw one with diamond shape scabbard, all steel,no brass, very little decoration. Commie emblem on blade and scabbard with the 11 rep. Well, anyway,, Thank you very much for the info,,learn something everyday!

Oooooh... now I got what are you talking about... You had in mind dagger is for generals...
I was talking about the M1940 Navy. The main difference from M1945 is no catch button which holds dagger in scabbard. Here is one of mines.

Lwov, I was also under the impression the Russian army daggers started around 1951, if this one is fake then it looks good. You live and learn.

L. , Yes! thats it! So so technically it is a Soviet Army generals dagger from WW 2, yes? I've seen and handled one a few years ago. I didn't remember seeing any insignia [anchor, prop,Kremlin, etc on it except the USSR emblem, and star on handle end..

Lwov, I missed that part about parade from the regulations. Thanks! Interesting also is that all 3 services (army-navy-af) daggers post ww2 are referred to as "pattern 1945". Does that mean that they were made, issued or bought, but not for everyday use with parade-service uniforms before the regulations approved of such wear? Best regards,
Tor-Helge

That is a good point, in 1945 only navy model was approved and issued and later on first AF and then army were approved and issued; there were no AF or Army made before. By the way some russian collectors argue that it should not be called M1945 because it did not existed at the time.

Hi all >>just to point out something, i agree the Army daggers were issued in 1955 according to certain sources. There is very limited info about Soviet daggers in general though, so still open for arguments. Also i own few Army daggers with NO YEAR.These daggers were issued after 1955 before 1957 ("according to the source") or before who knows I personally bought this dagger on Ebay so on a close hand inspection comparing the colors of the scabbard and the dagger itself, will be able to tell weather it is a part dagger on not. In any case this one is totally original and could be very well interchanged
ALWAYS BUYING ITALIAN/ FASCIST MILITARIA > AND SOVIET DAGGERS

I really appreciate this discussion. I had always wondered about the undated daggers. After reading the discussion, I went through some of the daggers I am selling and found I have both a Naval and an Army that lack the date. Both have the early gold plating (or traces). These two have been moved to the collection category and withdrawn from sale.
I would welcome any ideas on these undated pieces.
Also, there ae legitimate black gripped daggers. Does any know if they are special?
Thank you

Jim, Even thought there are no definite info as to the period, we can say that undated daggers are from 1956 (based on observations). Daggers made in 1955 were dated, and in 1957 daggers were marked ZIK 57(two last digits on the year). There were no legitimate black grips on soviet daggers. Some of them could just be period replacement of the regular yellow handle which was cracked.
