Bob, I think you are well within your rights to advise the buyer that you will not accept the return, the reasons why and that he will not be refunded his money. I would advise him that you will return the dagger to him if he requests that you do so. Otherwise, you keep the dagger. Dealers are not the only ones who can be "bad apples" and what he is trying to pull is inexcusable and on shaky legal ground. I know of one well-known collector-dealer who sold a goverment leader dagger and it was returned. The entire dagger and scabbard had been seriously buffed by the buyer. The seller refused to take it back and rightfully so.
