Hello Vik, I am by no means an expert for these knives. But I have several (they might be presumed as beeing rare) in my personal evidences. I did compare them with the knife shown by you and I have to say that yours do conform 1:1 with these in my evidences (which are reportedly originals). All little details, eg. the badge, the certain grip plates, the stamped number, the scabbard, the blade etching, the mm and much more, all does conform to the by me known originals. So I would say that the knife shown by you has big potential beeing a (nice!) original knife of the dutc youth organisation but I would like to hear also opinions of other, more experiened members.

A nice looking knife.. Is the handle scales bone or Ivory??

It looks like ivory. What should it be like? It’s just my first time with such a knife. How rare is it?

Originals are extremely rare. The grip is ivory.

The handle scales are Celluloid:

Most people recognize the pale-yellow pieces with graining that are meant to simulate ivory as celluloid these days. Celluloid was often referred to as “French Ivory” in its heyday to give it a little more snob appeal and is sometimes marked as such. The composition, however, has nothing at all to do with genuine ivory harvested from animal tusks. Another similar term for celluloid, Ivory Pyralin, is sometimes found stamped on these types of pieces as well.

Even though the pale-yellow pieces are recognized as this type of plastic most often, it took many forms and colors during the time it was being used. Celluloid was inexpensive, easy to work with, and durable when new. If you look around you can find knife handles, holiday decorations, razors, hair ornaments, dresser sets, and even jewelry made up of celluloid, and many of these are still in good condition today."

The grip plates of the dutch youth knife are without any doubt artificial ivory, most likely celluloid (I think there are ao othe "massive" materials, remember army daggers with artificial ivory grip). Real ivory has quite a different look. C. Wetzel-20609 does show us nice specimen of artificial ivory to compare.

So a slight disagreement on the handle... There is 2 types of ivory. Elephant tusk and walrus tusk. There is a way if distinguishing between the two. The grain is different... ,,and between the celluloid and ivory there must be a weight difference.

I found there are 6 types of Ivory: Elephant; Extinct Elephant (Mammoth); Hippo; Walrus; Whales and Warthog. Tests are made using weight, black light, magnifying glass and hot pin.

I agree with Gaspare, the Dutch youth knife shown is a very nice knife and an Eickhorn.

Very nice looking Dutch Youth knife, certainly one of the better conditioned examples out there. When I see these, they’re usually in very salty condition.

I absolutely agree, imitation Ivory without a doubt.
